Job in HOLLAND: PhD student: Patient-specific bone repositioning using 3-D planning

Job description

Bone deformities lead to impaired daily life activities, sick leave and disability resulting in high healthcare costs. Current surgical reconstruction techniques are either inaccurate or expensive, yet do not guarantee adequate treatment. In a European consortium, consisting of universities and industry, we will develop affordable surgical techniques for accurate repositioning of bone segments using patient-specific implants. The project delivers 1) 3D planning and implant design software, 2) implants that force accurate positioning and fixation of bone segments, 3) implants optimized for shape and load, and 4) optimized production procedures. The implants will render treatment minimally invasive. Within the part of the project related to this job opening we will develop and study image analysis methods for 3D planning and implant design.

Requirements

You have a background in informatics or physics at the M.Sc. level and a keen interest in developing advanced techniques in medical research. Experience in the field of development of image analysis methods is a preference. You have the skills to communicate with both clinicians and engineers and you can make the link between the image analysis methods and biomechanical/medical practice. You have good organizational skills and an excellent ability to express yourself in English.

AISSR and the Department of Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam
are looking for a PhD candidate who will participate in the NWO-funded
research project ‘Sexuality, Religion and Secularism. Cultural
encounters in the African Diaspora and the Netherlands’.

The PhD
candidate will conduct the subproject entitled ‘Sexual well-being and
relationships among African migrants’. This sub-project is embedded
within the larger research program titled ‘Sexuality, Religion and
Secularism. Cultural encounters in the African Diaspora and the
Netherlands’, carried out in cooperation with the University of
Groningen. The aim of this program is to research how sexual well-being
is approached from three perspectives:

1. that of (Dutch) organizations working with a sexual health approach,
2. that of religious actors in the African Diaspora and
3. the perspective of African migrants themselves.

Each
of these perspectives will be researched with attention to the
particular cultural trajectories they are part of, emerging from
sub-Sahara Africa and Europe. Theoretically, the research program
conceptualizes these approaches in terms of practices and techniques of
the self. Furthermore, the research program departs from the premise
that secularity is not a neutral phenomenon, but implies particular
techniques of the self and particular ways of framing religion and
tradition.

The focus of the project for which we are currently
hiring will be on the third perspective, with the aim of researching and
analyzing the personal biographies and cultural trajectories of African
migrants in the Netherlands. The focus is on the choices they make
regarding their sexual well-being and relationships, and the ways they
understand and experience the different (religious) organisations and
agents they encounter in this search.

The PhD candidate will be
based in Amsterdam at the AISSR and will conduct up to 12 months of
fieldwork in the Randstad, the conurbation in the west of the
Netherlands that encompasses Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht
and many smaller towns in between.

Tasks

• Participate in the AISSR PhD programme;
• conduct ethnographic field research;
• write and complete a PhD dissertation within four years;
• 10% teaching;
• participating in conferences, workshops, seminars and other scholarly activities.

Requirements

The PhD candidate should have the following credentials:

• have
  graduated with excellent results on a research-based MA thesis in
  Anthropology or a closely related discipline such as Cultural Sociology
  or Human Geography;
• have relevant (ethnographic) fieldwork experience on ideally on gender and sexuality;
• have excellent written and spoken English, and ideally fluent in French or Portuguese as well;
• to be able and willing to work in an interdisciplinary team;
• have the abilities to finish the PhD thesis in four years; i.e., good skills in planning, taking initiatives, academic writing.

 The Institute offers a Dutch-language Bachelor program (with two specializations in Political Science and International Relations), and three Master programs in English: a one-year Master program in Political Science, a two-year Political Science Research Master, and a two-year International Relations and Diplomacy Master. The focus of the Institute’s research program is on the design, workings and implications of political institutions (broadly defined).

Requirements

Candidates are expected to be able to teach generalist International Relations courses as well as specialized seminars within their own field, undertake research, seek external research funding, and publish in international refereed journals. Candidates are also expected to participate in the Institute’s intellectual life and further development. Applicants should have (or be close to obtaining) a PhD in political science with a specialization in international relations, a promising publication record and good teaching evaluations. The Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University invites applicants for a fulltime Lectureship in Chinese economy, including economic history and political economy, with special attention to its historical, social, political, and cultural contexts, on the transnational (Asian and East-Asian) and global as well as the national level. Appointment will be fixed-term from January 2014 through December 2016, with the possibility of extensions of up to three years, and of tenure thereafter. The lecturer will hold a position in the Leiden University Institute for Area Studies (LIAS). LIAS is committed to the integration of disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives, on a solid foundation of excellent language skills, and comprises a School of Asian Studies and a School of Middle-Eastern Studies. S/he will teach in Chinese Studies, Asian Studies, International Studies, and other programs and courses as required, including courses on issues, theories, and methods in Area Studies, on undergraduate and graduate levels.
Current staff in Asian Studies have expertise in the fields of Anthropology, Archeology, Art & Visual Studies, Development Studies, Economics, Film Studies, History, International Relations, Language Pedagogy, Law, Linguistics, Literature, Material Culture Studies, Media Studies, Performance Studies, Philology, Philosophy, Political Studies, Religious Studies, and Sociology. The local research environment includes an excellent library, and is enhanced by the Leiden University Asian Modernities and Traditions key research area (AMT), the Modern East Asia Research Center (MEARC), the Kern Institute, the International Institute for Asian Studies (IIAS), the Royal Netherlands Institute for Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), and the National Museum of Ethnography (MV).

Duties & Responsibilities

• Original research and regular dissemination of the results through appropriate channels.
  
• Teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels, supervision of BA and MA theses, and contributions to curriculum development.

Requirements

• A PhD degree in a relevant field (candidates near completion of the degree will be considered).

• A publication record that is commensurate with career stage.
  
• Demonstrable commitment to high-quality teaching practice, and wide teaching scope in terms of content.
  
• Demonstrable disciplinary expertise in a relevant field, specialist knowledge of Chinese economy in its historical, social, political, and cultural contexts, on the transnational (Asian and East-Asian) and global as well as the national level, and the ability to work from interdisciplinary, transnational, and comparative perspectives.
  
• An excellent command of Chinese. Proficiency in other (East-)Asian languages is an advantage.
  
• An excellent command of English. Most MA programs at Leiden University are taught in English, and English may be used in BA teaching as well.
  
• If the successful applicant is not Dutch-speaking, s/he is expected to acquire a good command of Dutch within two years from taking up duty. LIAS will fund her/his Dutch training at the University’s Academic Language Center.
  
• Upon appointment, depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, the lecturer may be required to enter a nationally standardized tertiary teaching skills certification trajectory (BKO or Basis Kwalificatie Onderwijs), successful completion of which is a condition for extensions and tenure.
  

Terms of Employment

The position of University Lecturer (Universitair Docent) is roughly equivalent to that of Assistant Professor in North-American terms. Salary range from gross € 3259,- to gross € 4462,- per month (pay scale 11), commensurate with qualifications, with additional holiday and end-of-year bonuses. Depending on qualifications, the appointee may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until s/he fully meets the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

LUC offers a full-time Assistant Professorship, starting on 1 August 2013, in the dynamic and growing academic setting of LeidenUniversity and The Hague.  LUC is located within the Faculty of Campus The Hague, Leiden’s second location in The Netherlands and a 12-minute train ride from the city of Leiden.  The Faculty is growing rapidly and has seen the recent arrival of the Institute for Public Administration, the establishment of the School of Governance and the Centre for Innovation, and the introduction of new bachelors and masters programmes. Holland: 2013 Salary criteria for highly-skilled migrants

Highly-skilled migrants, key personnel and those holding a Blue Card must fulfil a salary criterion, which would be reviewed on an annual basis. On the 1st of January, 2013, the following gross annual wages will go into effect, including vacation pay:

• Highly-skilled migrants from 30 years €52,010.-
• Highly-skilled migrants younger than 30 years €38,141.-
• People who graduated in the Netherlands €27,336.-
• Corporate employees €52,010.-
• Blue Card €60,952.-

To whom do these new rates apply?
The new rates apply to everyone who submits a request to the IND for an MVV (multiple entry clearance visa), a residence permit or a Blue Card, on or after 1 January, 2013. If an application for an MVV is submitted before that date, the wage criterion for 2012 would apply, even if the accompanying residence permit application is not submitted until after 1 January, 2013.

Do I need to adjust the salaries of our highly-skilled migrants annually according to the new wage criterion?
No

When should I apply the new wage rates?
1. When you employ a highly skilled migrant, a corporate employee or a Blue Card holder, either from another country or from the Netherlands;
2. When a corporate employee from another country is transferred;
3. At the time a residence permit is extended.

Furthermore, you should be sure that during the term of his contract, the salary of your highly-skilled migrant, corporate employee or Blue Card holder does not drop under the salary limit that applied when the request for a residence permit or the Blue Card was submitted (e.g. due to part-time work).

Which highly-skilled migrant falls into which category?
Highly-skilled migrants, 30 years or older, who are beginning employment on or after 1 January, 2013, should meet the wage criterion of €52,010.-

Highly skilled migrants, 29 years old or younger who are beginning employment on or after 1 January, 2013, should meet the wage criterion of €38,141.-

For the highly-skilled migrants who did, or will turn 30 years old during the course of their employment contract, the lower wage criterion will apply as long as they continue working for the same “employer”.
The “employer” here means: the person or legal entity with whom the employee has entered into an employment contract.
For students who graduate in the Netherlands and find employment as highly-skilled migrants within a year of completing their studies, there is an extra low wage criterion, regardless of their age. This criterion is set at €27,336.- for 2013 and will remain valid even if they change employers.

Scientific researchers and doctors in training to be specialists
Scientific researchers and doctors in training to be specialists may start employment as highly-skilled migrants but do not have to meet a wage criterion other than the general subsistence requirement from the Immigration Act. The social assistance benefits for a single person in 2013 will be €1100.89 per month (exclusive of vacation pay).

Corporate employees
When “start employment” and “employer” are mentioned above, what is also meant is: a company that receives a highly-skilled migrant within the confines of a corporate transfer and for that reason is regarded to be a sponsor by the IND.
Applicable to corporate employees who come to work in the Netherlands with a work permit (TWV) on or after 1 January 2013, there is a wage criterion of €52,010.-, which applies to the entire duration of the work permit.

Advice
If an employer does not meet the salary criterion, the Inspector from the Ministry of Social Affairs can impose a fine of €12,000.- per highly-skilled migrant, corporate employee or Blue Card holder. An employer, as a sponsor of highly-skilled migrants, is also required to report any changes in salaries to the IND.

Job description

The successful candidate is expected to study colonial and non-colonial land-use and settlement ecologies, i.e. the relationship between patterns of settlement and geological/morphological determinants. For this purpose, the candidate will create a detailed GIS including geological, hydrological and land-use information as well as archaeological settlement data. The collected and combined data sets should then be used for establishing and comparing location preferences and land-use strategies in both colonial and non-colonial landscapes.

We offer a vibrant environment to develop the skills and networks that a successful academic needs. The project aims to produce a substantial and methodologically sound archaeological dataset for the study of Roman colonization in the Republican period, thus providing a strong empirical basis for our understanding of the functioning and impact of Roman colonies.

Job description

The project is funded by a Dutch Cancer Foundation (KWF) and is entitled ‘Novel Protein  Kinases Targets In IGF-1 and EGF Receptor - Mediated Drug Resistant Breast Cancer’.

Treatment of breast cancer has improved with the introduction of anti-estrogen therapy. Yet a large percentage (>40%) of tamoxifen treated breast cancers eventually become resistant to tamoxifen, and also resistance to other anti-estrogens has been reported. Resistance to anti-estrogens has been linked to increased expression and/or activation of various receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) such as EGFR, IGF-1R and HER2. This may lead to downstream phosphorylation of the estrogen receptor and insensitivity to the antagonistic action of anti-estrogens.
We have recently established relevant models for anti-estrogen resistant breast cancer by ectopically expressing the human EGFR and IGF-1R in human MCF7 breast cancer cells. When stimulated with EGF or IGF1 respectively, these cells are almost completely resistant to inhibition of estradiol-induced cell proliferation by tamoxifen and fulvestrant. Using genome-wide protein kinase and phosphatase siRNA-based screening we identified >35 kinases and phosphatases in MCF7/IGF-1R cells that reversed the IGF1-induced tamoxifen resistance. These candidates may represent potentially novel drug targets for anti-estrogen resistant breast cancer. The goals of this project are to characterize these novel drug targets with respect to their role in tamoxifen resistance, breast cancer cell proliferation and survival in 3D models in vitro, and to validate the role of a selected number of these drug target candidates in control of cell proliferation, tamoxifen resistance, and tumor progression in vivo, in xenograft tumor models in mice.

Requirements

We seek a talented and highly motivated candidate with proven experience in cell and molecular biology, cell signalling and light microscopy. The candidate should have a MSc degree in (Medical) Biology, Life Science Technology, Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences or any other closely related discipline. Experience or affinity with image analysis is recommended.

Conditions of employment

The candidate will work within the Division of Toxicology and the Leiden Cell Observatory.  We are situated in the Gorlaeus Laboratories on the Science Park Leiden. Currently, 30 researchers including technicians, PhD students, and Postdocs work in the Division of Toxicology. The candidate will become part of a young and dynamic team of around 30 PhD students and postdocs with a strong expertise in and signal transduction, breast cancer models, and live cell imaging. We offer a vibrant, research-driven work environment with emphasis on team spirit, excellence, and skills development.
Appointment will be according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten), for the duration of one year with an extension of three years after positive evaluation. The salary will be set on € 2042,- per month in the first year up to € 2612,- in year four. An appointment with Leiden University includes a pension build-up and facilitates other benefits such as an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.

Job description

As part of the Target project the Donald Smits Centre for Information Technology (CIT) of the University of Groningen seeks an expert in scientific data visualization. The successful candidate will collaborate with the existing High Performance Computing and Visualization group in the CIT, to further expand the use of the existing 3D visualization theatre. New uses will include: the visualization of large datasets from astronomy, visualisation of medical datasets (in collaboration with Target Holding BV and the scientific Visualization and Computer Graphics Group of the university).
The successful candidate will participate in the development of the Infoversum project, including research into novel methods of data presentation. They will be expected to assist in the selection of suitable technology solutions for both projection and software systems. Moreover, they will take a leading role in the production of new material for the Infoversum.

Requirements

- a Bachelor level or higher degree in a relevant subject such as Multimedia Production
- significant experience in data visualization in several fields e.g. astronomy, geophysics, climate science
- proven experience in production of advanced multi-media materials for dome and/or 3D theatres
- detailed knowledge of one or more commercial systems used for dome visualization (e.g. E&S Digistar 4 or SCISS Uniview Theater/Producer)
- excellent communication skills, particularly when addressing expert audiences.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience up to a maximum of € 4,374 gross a month (scale 11) based on a full-time position. It is a temporary assignment starting as soon as possible and ending December 2014.

TARGET undertakes R&D of massive data handling and information systems for astronomical surveys such as ESA's Euclid mission, ASTRON's Lofar radio telescope, ESO's OmegaCAM optical wide-field imager and Muse spectrometer. Non-astronomical projects include handwritten text recognition and the medical Lifelines project, registering the medical records and genome profiles of 165,000 patients over a 30 year period.
TARGET provides a regional knowledge cluster initiated by the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, the University Computing Center, Artificial Intelligence Department, University Medical Center, ASTRON and various companies (including IBM and Oracle). TARGET connects distributed information systems to storage systems and compute grids ranging from Linux clusters, IBM Blue Gene/P to the European networks of EGEE GRID, EURO-VO and Astro-WISE.
Target initiates a visualization programme on "big-data" both for discovery, decision taking and dissemination purposes, employing the Universities 25 seats 3D-theatre and the Cave and bridging this to a new Target project, the Infoversum Dome Theatre. This state of the art, full-dome digital theatre is due to open in 2013. It will be located in the centre of Groningen and seat 265 people. The Infoversum will be used for a mixed programme, including scientific discovery, outreach, public relations, "infotainment" and business-to-business events.
