Job description
As part of the Target project the Donald Smits Centre for
Information Technology (CIT) of the University of Groningen seeks an
expert in scientific data visualization. The successful candidate will
collaborate with the existing High Performance Computing and
Visualization group in the CIT, to further expand the use of the
existing 3D visualization theatre. New uses will include: the
visualization of large datasets from astronomy, visualisation of medical
datasets (in collaboration with Target Holding BV and the scientific
Visualization and Computer Graphics Group of the university).
The successful candidate will participate in the development of the Infoversum project, including research into novel methods of data presentation. They will be expected to assist in the selection of suitable technology solutions for both projection and software systems. Moreover, they will take a leading role in the production of new material for the Infoversum.

Requirements
- a Bachelor level or higher degree in a relevant subject such as Multimedia Production
- significant experience in data visualization in several fields e.g. astronomy, geophysics, climate science
- proven experience in production of advanced multi-media materials for dome and/or 3D theatres
- detailed knowledge of one or more commercial systems used for dome visualization (e.g. E&S Digistar 4 or SCISS Uniview Theater/Producer)
- excellent communication skills, particularly when addressing expert audiences.

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on
qualifications and work experience up to a maximum of € 4,374 gross a
month (scale 11) based on a full-time position. It is a temporary
assignment starting as soon as possible and ending December 2014.

TARGET undertakes R&D of massive data handling and
information systems for astronomical surveys such as ESA's Euclid
mission, ASTRON's Lofar radio telescope, ESO's OmegaCAM optical
wide-field imager and Muse spectrometer. Non-astronomical projects
include handwritten text recognition and the medical Lifelines project,
registering the medical records and genome profiles of 165,000 patients
over a 30 year period.
TARGET provides a regional knowledge cluster initiated by the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, the University Computing Center, Artificial Intelligence Department, University Medical Center, ASTRON and various companies (including IBM and Oracle). TARGET connects distributed information systems to storage systems and compute grids ranging from Linux clusters, IBM Blue Gene/P to the European networks of EGEE GRID, EURO-VO and Astro-WISE.
Target initiates a visualization programme on "big-data" both for discovery, decision taking and dissemination purposes, employing the Universities 25 seats 3D-theatre and the Cave and bridging this to a new Target project, the Infoversum Dome Theatre. This state of the art, full-dome digital theatre is due to open in 2013. It will be located in the centre of Groningen and seat 265 people. The Infoversum will be used for a mixed programme, including scientific discovery, outreach, public relations, "infotainment" and business-to-business events.
