Job description

The postdoctoral researcher will study the emergence and development of the market for contemporary art in Brazil from a sociological perspective. The researcher will cooperate with other members of the project team, who conduct comparable studies in Russia, India and China. The researcher is also expected to teach in the field of Social Sciences.
Requirements

Completed Doctoral degree in Sociology or Anthropology. Candidates with a Doctoral degree in Economics or Art History, with a strong and demonstrable social scientific interests, are also encouraged to apply;
publications in peer-reviewed journals or with established academic publishers;
extensive experience with empirical research;
excellent command of English. Fluency in Portuguese will be considered a strong advantage.

Conditions of employment

The position will be on a temporary basis for the period of 3 years in case of a 0.8 fte appointment (30,4 hrs / week) or 2,4 years in case of full-time appointment. The starting date will be in the fall of 2012. The gross monthly salary will be € 3,195 in the first year in the case of a full-time position (38 hrs / week). Secondary benefits at Dutch universities are attractive and include 8% holiday pay and an 8.3% end of year bonus.

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves around 9,000 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programmes in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in education as well as research. There are over 1,200 employees at the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.

Department of Sociology and Anthropology

The Department of Sociology and Anthropology is one of the Departments in the FMG. Research and education are carried out by special institutes. The College of Social Sciences (CSS) and the Graduate School for the Social Sciences (GSSS) are responsible for the undergraduate and graduate teaching programmes in the social sciences. Research takes place under the aegis of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), a multidisciplinary research institute.
