The degree programme in European Languages and Cultures (ETC) of the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Arts is seeking a university lecturer (UD) in Spanish culture and literature in a European comparative perspective, for the Culture and Literature profile of the degree programme. The University Lecturer in Spanish should focus in particular on modern cultural and literary studies but must also have knowledge of earlier periods. We are looking for an enthusiastic and versatile colleague who has the experience to contribute to the teaching and research programme in the field of Spanish cultural and literary studies. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the degree programme in ETC, the UD must be able to place Spanish literature and culture into a broader European historical, socio-academic and social context. He or she must also be able to contribute to the Spanish language proficiency programme and to collaboration with the Language and Society and the Politics and Society profiles of the degree programme, as well as to collaboration outside the degree programme.

The UD should be capable of attracting students to the degree programme in European Languages and Cultures as a result of inspiring teaching methods.

The research will form part of the ICOG research institute.

Specific duties:
- teaching in the field of European literary and cultural studies, in particular Spanish literary and cultural studies in a comparative perspective, within the bachelor’s degree programme in ETC and the master’s degree programme in Literature and Culture
- teaching Spanish language proficiency course units
- teaching in the minors Europe: Culture and Literature, Mexican and Latin American Studies, and Literary Culture in Premodern Europe
- conducting high-quality academic research in the aforementioned fields

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The University of Groningen is offering a salary based on qualifications and experience of between € 3,324 (scale 11) and € 5,171 (scale 12 Dutch Universities) gross per month for a fulltime position. The appointment is for two years, after which a Results and Development interview will be held to examine whether the performance justifies conversion of the temporary appointment into a permanent one.

Date of entry into employment: 1 September 2015, or earlier if possible.

Job description

The ETC degree programme is looking for an enthusiastic university lecturer (UD: universitair docent) in politics and society, who will contribute significantly to the bachelor's degree programme in European Languages.
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the ETC degree programme, the UD must be able to place European politics and society into a wider cultural and social-scientific context. Although the lecturer will be appointed by the ETC department, due to the nature of the subject field close ties will be maintained with the degree programmes in History and International Relations and International Organization, which have an excellent reputation within the Netherlands and abroad in the fields of teaching and research.
The position will comprise a combination of teaching (60%) and research (40%) in the field of political history, focusing in particular on the above-mentioned areas. In addition to teaching within the ETC degree programme, the UD may also occasionally be asked to teach elsewhere in the Faculty, primarily in the bachelor's and master's degree programmes in History. The aim of the PhD programme of the Graduate School is to turn out highly qualified researchers. Job description

Cosmic particles with energies of up to 1020 eV pose a challenge as their source is a complete mystery; they are currently investigated at the international Pierre Auger Observatory, located in Argentina. The particle measurements can be strongly disturbed by thunderstorms, because the electric fields in a thunderstorm can accelerate shower particles and create ionization avalanches — but how large is the effect for a given electric field, or for a given proximity of a storm? A complementary question arises for thunderstorms, one of the most energetic and least understood processes in our atmosphere. Could cosmic-particle showers play a role in lightning inception? Which physical mechanisms are precisely at work when cosmic particle showers impact a cloud? Which particle energies make a significant impact, and is their number density sufficient?
To answer these questions, we now seek to hire 2 PhD students within the project 'Cosmic Lightning'. One student will work on the interface between observations and simulations and be based at the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) in Groningen, and one will mainly develop models and be based at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica in Amsterdam (CWI) within the group on Multiscale Dynamics.

In the observations the interplay between ultra-high-energy cosmic particles and thunderstorm activity in the atmosphere is investigated using radio-detection techniques at the major international infrastructures LOFAR and Pierre Auger Observatory. The theoretical student will join the particle shower models (roughly for particle energies of 1020 to 106 eV) available at KVI with gas discharge models (roughly for electron energies from 106 to 10-2 eV) available at CWI into one joint model and use it for estimates and predictions.

The KVI is an interfaculty institute for atomic and subatomic physics of the University of Groningen (RUG) and its staff members are employed partly by the university and partly by the NWO Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM). CWI is the national research institute of The Netherlands for applied mathematics and computer science, directly supported by NWO. It is located at Science Park Amsterdam.

Requirements

We are looking for two highly motivated students with a strong interest in theoretical, computational, and experimental physics.
The PhD candidates are required to have a master's degree in (applied) mathematics, atmosphere-ocean science, (theoretical) physics, or a related field. Ideally, the candidate has a good knowledge of stochastics, numerical methods, (geophysical) fluid dynamics, and statistics, as well as experience with scientific programming. Candidates are expected to have an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills.

Conditions of employment

When fulfilling a PhD position at the FOM foundation, you will get the status of junior scientist. You will have an employee status and can participate in all the employee benefits FOM offers. You will get a contract for 4 years. Your salary will be up to a maximum of 2,636 euro gross per month.The salary is supplemented with a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8,33%. As part of the Target project the Donald Smits Centre for Information Technology (CIT) of the University of Groningen seeks an expert in scientific data visualization. The successful candidate will collaborate with the existing High Performance Computing and Visualization group in the CIT, to further expand the use of the existing 3D visualization theatre. TARGET undertakes R&D of massive data handling and information systems for astronomical surveys such as ESA's Euclid mission, ASTRON's Lofar radio telescope, ESO's OmegaCAM optical wide-field imager and Muse spectrometer. Non-astronomical projects include handwritten text recognition and the medical Lifelines project, registering the medical records and genome profiles of 165,000 patients over a 30 year period.
TARGET provides a regional knowledge cluster initiated by the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute, the University Computing Center, Artificial Intelligence Department, University Medical Center, ASTRON and various companies (including IBM and Oracle). TARGET connects distributed information systems to storage systems and compute grids ranging from Linux clusters, IBM Blue Gene/P to the European networks of EGEE GRID, EURO-VO and Astro-WISE.
Target initiates a visualization programme on "big-data" both for discovery, decision taking and dissemination purposes, employing the Universities 25 seats 3D-theatre and the Cave and bridging this to a new Target project, the Infoversum Dome Theatre. This state of the art, full-dome digital theatre is due to open in 2013. It will be located in the centre of Groningen and seat 265 people. The Infoversum will be used for a mixed programme, including scientific discovery, outreach, public relations, "infotainment" and business-to-business events.

Traditional Dutch food: Boerenjongens (Brandied Sultanas)

Boerenjongens is a speciality from the Groningen province in the north of the Netherlands. It is made with sultanas (a type of raisin), brandy and spices. 

 It's traditionally served on special occasions, such as Christmas or country weddings. In fact, its popularity at old country weddings, where the bride would serve it to guests from a large silver, earthenware or glass vessel, earned it the name of bruidstranen ('bride's tears'). Boerenjongens are often enjoyed as a drink in a glass with a little fork or spoon to scoop out the brandy-soaked sultanas. Today, the sultanas are often scooped out and added to ice creams, desserts and cakes.
This recipe is more than just a Dutch version of rum raisins. In fact, the Dutch have been making and trading brandy for so long that the English word for brandy comes from the Dutch brandewijn ("burnt wine", which refers to the distillation process). The art of distillation can be traced back to the ancient civilizations, but by the Middle Ages the frugal Dutch used it as a means to preserve wine. The brandy itself was often used for fruit preservation.

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 25 minutes
Yield: A few small jars.

Ingredients:

• 1 1/4 cups brown sugar (250 g)
• 1 cup water (250 ml)
• 1 lemon, zest only
• 3 1/3 cups sultana raisins (500 g)
• 1 tsp honey
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 1 cinnamon stick
• 1 clove
• 4 1/4 cups (1 quart) brandy (1 liter)

Preparation:

Add the sugar and water to a saucepan and cook over a medium heat until the sugar has dissolved. With a sharp knife, pare off two very thin strips of lemon peel (try not to get too much of the pith, which will add a bitter taste). Add the lemon zest to the saucepan, along with the sultanas, honey, vanilla and spices. Cook on a low heat until the fruit has swelled and softened. Bring to the boil, and then using a slotted spoon immediately scoop the sultanas into a couple of sterilized jam jars (see Tips below).
Now reduce the remaining liquid until it thickens. Remove from the heat and allow to cool. Remove the lemon zest and spices. Pour the liquid over the sultanas. Add the brandy. Seal the jars tightly, shake and store in a cool, dark place for at least 6 weeks before consuming. They're even better after 3 months and will keep unopened for a year. Once opened, keep chilled.
Tips:
Sterilize jam jars and lids by washing them in warm, soapy water, rinsing thoroughly and then allowing them to dry in a warm oven (250 degrees F or 130 degrees C). I prefer using lots of small jars, instead of one large jar. This way, you can give away a jar or two as culinary gifts, or take advantage of both early and late 'vintages'.

The American Studies Department is seeking a lecturer/PhD candidate to service a rapidly expanding undergraduate student body and boost its ambitious research agenda.
The University of Groningen is the only university in the Netherlands to offer a completely independent BA program in American Studies, as well as an MA program in North American Studies. The curriculum is unique in that it is truly interdisciplinary (no monodisciplinary courses) and designed exclusively for American Studies (no cross-listing with other programs). The curriculum is also unique in The Netherlands in that it is entirely delivered in English. The program offers extensive possibilities for doing (under)graduate work and internships in North America.
The Department of American Studies is the national powerhouse for the development of Early American Studies and Hemispheric American Studies in the Netherlands. Groningen's international and internationally renowned American Studies faculty has previously taught at Harvard, Brown, and Louisiana State University (US), University of Glasgow (UK), York University (Canada), Göttingen University (Germany). Job description

This full-time position of lecturer/PhD researcher is a temporary appointment for five years. The successful candidate is expected to spend 40 percent of her/his time on teaching, and 60 percent on a PhD project in one of the research areas in American Studies mentioned above. For legal reasons (related to the different salary scales and job performance requirements pertaining to each position), there will formally be two separate appointments. After the first year of employment there will be an assessment of the appointee's teaching performance and research, on the basis of which it will be decided whether the appointment will be continued.

Candidates are expected to complete a PhD dissertation within the five-year period.

The candidates' eligibility for the position will be assessed on the basis of:

    their potential to carry out PhD research
    quality, originality and relevance of the research proposal
    relevance of the proposal to the Department's research program
    feasibility for the project to be completed within five years.


The successful candidate will be expected to teach within the BA program in American Studies program, for the most part in such areas as popular culture, cultural theory and rhetoric and composition.

Research at ICOG is characterised by its interdisciplinary nature, which means that the research groups are organised in such a way as to encourage links - both synchronic and diachronic - between them. Within the ICOG there are three main research groups: Politics, Media and Nation-building, Cultures and Identity, and Society and the Arts.

Job description

This postdoc project applies and tests theories about the construction, representation and narrativization of traumatic histories in the context of the East-European memory of the Soviet imperial past(s). The project analyses the problematic assimilation and contamination of the memories of the imperial oppression, Soviet Terror, and the collapse of the Soviet Empire into collective narratives of self that are simultaneously coherent and disturbed. The working hypothesis is that literary texts in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine have played important but different roles in filling post-traumatic gaps and disseminating culturally shared memories. The description of these phenomena will benefit from critical analyses from the perspective of trauma theory. The one-year project will result in a series of publications in peer-reviewed journals in Slavonic studies and trauma studies.

The position is part of the research project "The Imperialism of Martyrdom: Suffering, Agency, and Memory in Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian Films and Novels", coordinated by dr Sander Brouwer of the Dept. of Slavic Languages and Cultures. It is part of the research project "Memory at War: Cultural Dynamics in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine", which has been made possible as a result of the award of a 2009 HERA JRP grant (Humanities in the European Research Area, Joint Research Program) in the category "Cultural Dynamics: Inheritance and Identity". The University of Cambridge is leading this project, it is furthermore accomplished in association with the Universities of Bergen, Helsinki, and Tartu.

The Department of IRIO is committed to top tier research combined with high quality education. This commitment to excellence is apparent at both the undergraduate, graduate and PhD levels. IRIO, with over 30 staff members, provides high quality, interdisciplinary and international Bachelor and Master degree programmes. Students and staff study international relations and the role of international organization in an integrated manner from historical, political, economic and legal angles. The Department provides an international working environment for an increasing number of foreign students and research staff. Teaching is organized in cooperation with staff members from the Department of History, and the faculties of Law and Economics. The Bachelor and Master degree programmes are taught in both English and Dutch. There are currently over 1,000 students registered for IRIO programmes. Additionally, the Department is responsible for the Erasmus Mundus Master degree programme in Humanitarian Action, and the Research Master programme Modern History and International Relations. Research in the Department of IRIO is organised under the responsibility of the five chairs of the Department, respectively: International Security; International Political Economy; European Integration; Global Governance and Humanitarian Action.

Functiebeschrijving

The objective of the position is to teach and conduct research in the field of archaeozoology, with a focus on the archaeozoology of Northwestern Europe. Important fields of archaeozoological study at the University of Groningen are the archaeozoology of the terpen area in the Northern Netherlands region, that of other wetlands in The Netherlands and that in the Mediterranean area, in period ranging from the Mesolithic through the (Post-)Middle Ages. Teaching takes place at the department of archaeology (Ba and Ma Archaeology) and at the Researchmaster (Art History & Archaeology), while the research is carried out within the Groningen Institute of Archaeology (GIA). The supervision of undergraduate, graduate and PhD students plays an important part in the position. In addition, the duties of the lecturer also include participation in institute work groups and committees (management and administration). The lecturer will be member of the chair of Pre- and Protohistory of Northwestern Europe.

Functie-eisen

- a completed PhD in the field of archaeozoology of Northwestern Europe. Affinity with the Mediterranean area and/or the Arctics is a plus
- affinity with ecological as well as cultural archaeology, anthropology and multidisciplinary research
- thorough knowledge and understanding of archaeozoology, expressed by proven research results, supported by a list of publications
- fieldwork experience
- experience with various teaching methods and working with students of different levels
- excellent organizational qualities and communication skills
- good knowledge of English
- good knowledge of Dutch, or willingness to learn Dutch within two years
- living in or near Groningen or willing to move to or near Groningen within two years.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience with a minimum of € 3,195 (salary scale 11) till a maximum of € 4,970 (salary scale 12) gross per month for a full-time position. The appointment will be for a period of two years, with the prospect of appointment for an indefinite period. This will be determined based on an appraisal, which will be made within two years.

Date of entry into employment: to be agreed upon.

The Department of Archaeology/Groningen Institute of Archaeology
Archaeology is organized within four chairs: Arctic studies, Classical and Mediterranean archaeology, Greek Archaeology and Prehistory and Protohistory of Northwestern Europe. The chairs of archaeology participate in the department of archaeology (teaching) and GIA (research). Characteristic of both the research and educational program is the focus on natural sciences within archaeology.
