Postdoc researcher in Law University of Amsterdam (UvA) - Amsterdam — AcademicTransfer

Postdoc researcher in Law University of Amsterdam (UvA) - Amsterdam — AcademicTransfer

Job description

The Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) and the Institute for Information Law (IViR), part of the University of Amsterdam (UvA), have a vacancy for a Postdoc researcher in Law.

‘Personalised
Communication’ is a cooperation between two Research Priority Areas at
the University of Amsterdam: Communication and Information Law. This
project will make the University of Amsterdam a central place for
research, training, and public debate on personalised communication.

The
term personalised communication captures the fundamental change in, and
challenges of, communication today. Profiling and targeting users with
customised messages can offer a solution to “digital” challenges, such
as information overload, the resulting attention scarcity, and the
fierce competition for users’ loyalty. Personalised communication can
tailor information and generate citizen engagement but it can also lead
to manipulated or biased communication that, in the worst case, deprives
users from access to more meaningful or more diverse information.

This
project focuses specifically on the uses and implications of
personalized information and communication for individuals and the
society in the realm of politics. Given the shift from mass
communication to personalized communication, new theoretical approaches
are needed to advance existing communication theories, and novel
questions are waiting to be addressed. Does more choice in the
information environment lead to a disintegrated, self-centred public
sphere, extreme opinions, and polarized electorates? Or does
personalized communication enhance individual knowledge and citizen
engagement? What is the potential for abuse, manipulation and
discriminatory differentiation? And how do we negotiate the trade-off
between more personalized, more relevant communication and users’
autonomy, privacy, and right to equal treatment and impartial
information?

The postdoctoral researchers will conduct empirical
and normative research on the uses, effects, and implications of
personalised communication in the area of politics and influence of
personalisation on the public debate and the diversity of information
exposure. This project also has a strong outreach function, and the
researchers are expected to organize workshops, lectures and public
debates and foster engagement with groups and stakeholders within and
outside the University. Responsibilities will also include the
acquisition of grants and (limited) teaching and mentoring obligations.

Requirements

The legal candidate should:

  • have
    proven expertise in the following fields: Media law and policy;
    E-Commerce law; Unfair commercial practice law; Fundamental rights;
  • preferably have knowledge of privacy and data protection regulation;
  • have an interest in political theories of the media;
  • have good knowledge of current developments in information markets and technology;
  • have a creative mind and analytical intelligence;
  • have proven experience with working in a multidisciplinary team;
  • preferably have experience with writing grant applications and project proposals;
  • preferably have experience with organising workshops, lecture series, and similar events;
  • have strong communication skills;
  • have
    an excellent written and spoken command of English, as demonstrated by
    publications in English-language journals and presentations at
    international conferences;
  • have a PhD in law, or equivalent degree.

Conditions of employment

The
position ideally starts 1 January 2015, and is initially for 2 years.
Depending on your knowledge and experience, your monthly gross salary
will range between €3,037 and €4,462 (scale 10 or 11 according to the
Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities) based on a
full-time appointment.

We offer a pension scheme, a holiday
allowance of 8% per year and flexible employment conditions. Conditions
are based on the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities.

Organisation

The Amsterdam School of Communication Research (ASCoR) is
the research institute in Communication Science at the University of
Amsterdam. It is the largest research institute of its kind in Europe
and is among the largest worldwide. More than 50 senior researchers are
permanently associated with ASCoR, and its English-language PhD program
has more than 35 students.

The postdoc will work together with the postdoc researcher in Law (Institute for Information Law (IViR)),
as part of a multidisciplinary team of legal scholars and communication
scientists, led by Prof. dr. Claes de Vreese and Prof. dr. Natali
Helberger.

The researchers will be charged with performing
empirical (postdoc researcher in Communication Science) and normative
(Legal postdoc) research on the  implications of the use of algorithmic
profiling and targeting strategies in relation to individual users and
society at large. The research will be part of a new and innovative
research initiative on ‘Personalised Communication’, to study the uses,
effects, and normative aspects of personalised communication.

‘Personalised
Communication’ is a cooperation between two Research Priority Areas at
the University of Amsterdam: Communication and Information Law.

Additional information

The project description may be obtained from the ASCoR Secretariat. Questions about the project content should be addressed to:

Job description

The title of the research project is: “Database on legal position of same-sex and different-sex families in European countries”.

A
growing number of European countries has extended a growing portion of
the legal aspects of marriage to same-sex and/or unmarried couples, and
sometimes also to their children. This legal recognition of diversity
has led to considerable legal diversity within and between European
countries. Simultaneously, political and judicial bodies of European
Union and Council of Europe have been developing minimum standards for
the legal recognition of same-sex and/or non-marital families.

This
project focuses on the legal rights and obligations related to three
family formats (marriage, registered partnership, cohabitation), in
particular with respect to such life-course transitions as parenting,
migration, loss of income, separation and death. To this end a
questionnaire has been designed for legal experts in some 20 European
countries where two or more of these legal family formats exist for
same-sex and/or different-sex partners. The national data will be used
for an online database and for comparative legal analysis in light of
the European minimum standards.

This research, led by Prof. Kees
Waaldijk (holder of the world’s first chair in Comparative Sexual
Orientation Law), uses the methodology he developed for the 2005 report
More or less together – Levels of legal consequences of marriage,
cohabitation and registered partnership for different-sex and same-sex
partners. The project is partly funded by the European Union, as part of
a larger interdisciplinary research project (FamiliesAndSocieties –
Changing families and sustainable societies: Policy contexts and
diversity over the life course and across generations) coordinated by
Stockholm University.

The researcher will play a key role in
organizing the survey, liaising with the legal experts, checking their
data and collecting additional data, entering data into the database,
and liaising with experts from other disciplines. The researcher will
also be gathering and interpreting European legal materials, and will be
involved in the comparative analysis of the legal data.

Outside
this main research project, the researcher may also have some other
tasks, including assisting in the development of a Global Legal Index on
Legal Recognition of Homosexual Orientation. This will involve
corresponding to experts all over the world.

Requirements

• LLM or PhD in law;
• Research experience in law;
• Affinity with legal issues concerning same-sex families and with comparative, European and international law;
• Good writing skills in English, plus reading skills in at least one other language;
• Good communication and computer skills, familiarity with MS Excell etc;
• Accuracy.

Conditions of employment

We
offer a full-time or part-time, six months term position, with the
possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance.

Salary
range from € € 2.542,- to € € 3.831,- gross per month on a fulltime
basis (pay scale 9/10 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement
for Dutch Universities). Salary depends on education and experience.

Leiden
University offers an attractive benefits package with additional
holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses(8.3 %), training and career
development and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you
some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions.
Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a
substantial tax break.

The work location is The Hague. The starting date is 1 December 2014, or as soon as possible after that.

Job description

Tilburg Law SchoolTilburg University is a modern and specialized university. With a broad variety of international programs and innovating research (Law, Public Administration), Tilburg Law School stands for high quality. Research at the Tilburg Law School is conducted in an organization that fosters diversity. The Tilburg Graduate Law School is responsible for the training and guidance of its Research Master students and of the Faculty's PhD researchers. With its open and inspiring atmosphere, this Faculty is a congenial working environment.
The position
At Tilburg Law School we have a vacancy for a highly talented post-doctoral researcher who will be one of the main researchers in the project ‘Smart Transformations in City-regional Law and Governance’, which is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research and Province North-Brabant. The project focuses on analyzing and developing innovative and adaptive co-operation across several boarders, in order to address local and regional authorities’ increasing loss of the possibilities for autonomous policy-making. In essence, what is needed for effective governing, is hybrid governance across (sub-)national territorial boarders, across sectors and across the public-private divide. In different sectors new ways of governing, such as tripartite co-operations and a growing use of ‘alternative’ governance instruments, have been witnessed. Their effectiveness may very well depend on the context of the sector with its specific regulations. Intriguing question then is whether a governance arrangement that is solid in one context could also prove to be beneficial in another context. Mutual learning is vital for innovative urban and regional governance and regional law. Hybrid governance is challenging, and it has, potentially, at least one downside: the difficult safeguarding of its democratic legitimacy. Traditional direct legitimization has eroded, partly because it only provides direct legitimacy at one level whereas governance is nowadays multi-level. Besides, elected councils only represent citizens in places where the latter live and vote, while citizens are bound to have interests in places where they do not live (and vote) but work, recreate, or identify without the possibility of securing representation. In this interdisciplinary research project, the postdoctoral researchers shall analyse both the legal and governance implications of hybrid instruments, and answer the two focal research questions:
(1) How, and to what extent, can policy and lawmakers learn from experiences with hybrid governance in different contexts;
(2) How can democratic legitimacy be safeguarded in a context of hybrid governance?
The researcher will study and compare international cases, in close co-operation with other researchers and practitioners in the city-regions concerned.
The research context
In this position the researcher will closely co-operate with other postdoc researchers and the project leaders, dr. L. Schaap & mr. dr. S.H. Ranchordás. The positions are functionally integrated in Tireg, the Brabant Center for Transformations in Regional Law and Governance (which is in the process of being established). You take an active role in Tireg contributing to its fundamental research as well as its activities aimed at learning of practitioners, and will assist in organizing conferences and workshops. In addition, you will contribute to the visibility and reputation of Tireg in the Netherlands, at the European level and internationally. Teaching may also be part of the activities.

Requirements

In the light of the above, we are looking for a talented researcher who has completed a Ph.D. in Public law or in Public Administration/Political Science. Applicants should be acquainted with or be able to demonstrate that they are interested in regional issues and working with practitioners. Candidates are expected to combine good research skills with excellent networking and communicative skills, an entrepreneurial mindset, creativity in theoretical as well as methodological matters, and the ability to help build Tireg.
In addition, candidates should have demonstrable experience with both individual and team-work research, preferably in an international environment, and have an excellent command of English, both written and spoken. Candidates should also master Dutch or be willing to learn Dutch rapidly, in order to be able to deal with Dutch-language materials and with Dutch speakers in due time.  A good command of German (at least speaking and reading skills) is also highly recommended.
