• Teaching and developing courses in Brazilian linguistics and Brazilian Portuguese language acquisition in the department Latin American Studies and the BA International Studies.
• Participation in developing the linguistics curriculum of LUCL, and implementation of innovative concepts for language teaching.
• Research in Brazilian linguistics and supervision of BA, MA and PhD students.
• Participation in ongoing research at LUCL, acquisition of research grants at the national and European level.

Requirements

• A PhD in Brazilian Portuguese linguistics.
• Experience with teaching Brazilian linguistics and Brazilian Portuguese language acquisition.
• Proven didactic qualities (teaching evaluations).
• An interest in and preferably experience with research-driven teaching.
• Excellent research qualities and an active research profile in the study of Brazilian Portuguese linguistics.
• Research experience in the study of Portuguese language variation in Latin America.
• Native or near native speaker of Brazilian Portuguese. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.
• Non-Dutch nationals are expected to fluently speak Dutch within two years after their appointment.

 
Leiden University requires staff to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualifications (BKO). In case the successful applicant does not posseses this qualification or its equivalent, the Institute will offer support in obtaining it.

Conditions of employment

The successful candidate will closely collaborate with other members of LUCL and especially with members of the department Latin American Studies, who are involved in language teaching. The position is for 1,0 fte as Universitair Docent for two years, with the possibility of an extension for two more years. The salary depends on qualifications and experience and is ranges from € 2.427, - to € 4.462, - per month (salary scale 10 or 11), commensurate with qualifications, with additional holiday and end-of-year bonuses.

Job description

The ETC degree programme is looking for an enthusiastic university lecturer (UD: universitair docent) in politics and society, who will contribute significantly to the bachelor's degree programme in European Languages.
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the ETC degree programme, the UD must be able to place European politics and society into a wider cultural and social-scientific context. Although the lecturer will be appointed by the ETC department, due to the nature of the subject field close ties will be maintained with the degree programmes in History and International Relations and International Organization, which have an excellent reputation within the Netherlands and abroad in the fields of teaching and research.
The position will comprise a combination of teaching (60%) and research (40%) in the field of political history, focusing in particular on the above-mentioned areas. In addition to teaching within the ETC degree programme, the UD may also occasionally be asked to teach elsewhere in the Faculty, primarily in the bachelor's and master's degree programmes in History. Research by the UD will take place under the auspices of the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG) and its Centre for Historical Studies.

Specific tasks:
- providing teaching in the field of political culture in Europe, particularly European integration and disintegration, nation state and nationalism and the relationship between culture, politics and society within the bachelor's degree programme in European Languages and Cultures and occasionally in the bachelor's and master's degree programmes in History
- supervising Bachelor's and Master's theses in the aforementioned field
- making an active contribution to the evaluation and development of the degree programme and its individual course units
- conducting academic research in the field of European political history
- performing administrative and organisational duties.

Requirements

In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for a candidate with a PhD in the field of modern political history, and who has an adequate command of Dutch or who is willing to learn Dutch within two years, and who also

in the area of teaching:
- has extensive experience with teaching university-level European political history
- has a sufficiently proficient command of English to be able to teach in English in the European Languages and Cultures degree programme
- has gained the Basic Teaching Qualification or is prepared to do so within a year
- is an excellent teacher, as demonstrated by positive teaching evaluations
- is demonstrably able to make concrete contributions to the development of course units, partly by actively linking teaching to research.

In the area of research:
- has a personal research line as demonstrated by publications in the area of expertise mentioned
- has international experience and an international network.

In the area of management and organisation:

Job description

The aim of the PhD programme of the Graduate School is to turn out highly qualified researchers. For this purpose, the Graduate School offers PhD positions to excellent candidates who recently graduated. The PhD programme takes three years and leads to a PhD degree. These three years are primarily spent on the PhD thesis.
The PhD programme is embedded in the research institute ThRS with three excellent research programmes, namely:

• have a MA degree, preferable of two years in Theology or Religious Studies, or other areas in the Humanities

In addition to a one year Master degree, applicants can prove that they have sufficient research-related experience and knowledge. Examples of such equivalence include: an Mphil degree from a well-reputed university; having obtained a second regular Master degree from a well-reputed university; or having completed a research-oriented Honours programme with a minimum of 30 EC.

• be fluent in English (written and spoken)
• have the abilities to finish the PhD thesis in three years, like planning, taking initiative, academic writing, desire to publish.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary of minimal € 2,062 gross a month in the first year to maximal € 2,638 a month in the final year based on a full-time position. In addition there are a 8% holiday allowance and a 8,3% end of year bonus. The 0,9 fte appointment is temporary for a period of three years, under the condition of a positive assessment in the end of the first year to evaluate the feasibility of successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next two years.
