Job description

The ETC degree programme is looking for an enthusiastic university lecturer (UD: universitair docent) in politics and society, who will contribute significantly to the bachelor's degree programme in European Languages.
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the ETC degree programme, the UD must be able to place European politics and society into a wider cultural and social-scientific context. Although the lecturer will be appointed by the ETC department, due to the nature of the subject field close ties will be maintained with the degree programmes in History and International Relations and International Organization, which have an excellent reputation within the Netherlands and abroad in the fields of teaching and research.
The position will comprise a combination of teaching (60%) and research (40%) in the field of political history, focusing in particular on the above-mentioned areas. In addition to teaching within the ETC degree programme, the UD may also occasionally be asked to teach elsewhere in the Faculty, primarily in the bachelor's and master's degree programmes in History. Research by the UD will take place under the auspices of the Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture (ICOG) and its Centre for Historical Studies.

Specific tasks:
- providing teaching in the field of political culture in Europe, particularly European integration and disintegration, nation state and nationalism and the relationship between culture, politics and society within the bachelor's degree programme in European Languages and Cultures and occasionally in the bachelor's and master's degree programmes in History
- supervising Bachelor's and Master's theses in the aforementioned field
- making an active contribution to the evaluation and development of the degree programme and its individual course units
- conducting academic research in the field of European political history
- performing administrative and organisational duties.

Requirements

In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results-oriented attitude, we are looking for a candidate with a PhD in the field of modern political history, and who has an adequate command of Dutch or who is willing to learn Dutch within two years, and who also

in the area of teaching:
- has extensive experience with teaching university-level European political history
- has a sufficiently proficient command of English to be able to teach in English in the European Languages and Cultures degree programme
- has gained the Basic Teaching Qualification or is prepared to do so within a year
- is an excellent teacher, as demonstrated by positive teaching evaluations
- is demonstrably able to make concrete contributions to the development of course units, partly by actively linking teaching to research.

In the area of research:
- has a personal research line as demonstrated by publications in the area of expertise mentioned
- has international experience and an international network.

In the area of management and organisation:
- is able to make a constructive contribution to interdisciplinary collaboration and a friendly atmosphere within the department
- has demonstrable administrative and organization skills.

VACANCY Assistant Professor in International Relations with expertise on Middle-East politics

Developing, conducting, and supervising high quality academic research on the international and transnational relations of the Middle East;
Teaching general and specialist courses in Political Science, more in particular International Relations at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels, and involvement in post-graduate supervision;
(Participation in) the acquisition of external research funding;
Contributing to the research programme of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research and to the development of the field through scholarly publications and participation in national and international research networks and educational initiatives.

Requirements

A completed doctoral thesis in Political Science or other relevant field in the social sciences;
An ongoing programme of research and publications, focused on internationally ranked, ‘peer reviewed’ journals and/or books published by internationally recognized academic presses;
Broad general knowledge in International Relations;
Mastery of appropriate social science research methods (qualitative and/or quantitative);
Ability to provide excellent and inspiring teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in English as well as (eventually) Dutch;
Strong passive and adequate active knowledge of Dutch, or the ability and willingness to acquire such within a period of three years;
The basic qualification at Dutch universities in higher education (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs; BKO) certificate, or a willingness to acquire such.

Conditions of employment

Depending on experience, pay will be based on assistant professor scale 1 or 2 (i.e. a gross monthly salary ranging from a minimum of €3195 to a maximum of € 4970 for full-time work, based on the January 2009 salary scale). Holiday pay is 8% of the gross annual salary, while the year-end bonus is 8.3% of the gross annual salary. According to our employment policies, you will be offered a temporary contract for three years, with conditions for tenured position thereafter agreed upon appointment.

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves around 9,000 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programs in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. Introduction of the ‘European Blue Card’

As from 19 June 2011 the Netherlands has a new purpose of stay: the European Blue Card. The European Blue Card is a separate purpose of stay in addition to the existing National Highly Skilled Migrant Programme. The EU Blue Card Council Directive is intended for highly skilled foreign nationals who do not have EU, EEA or Swiss nationality, and who wish to work in one of the member states of the EU. The Directive is also meant to make it easier to settle in another EU member state. A residence permit will always be required in that other member state, however. To obtain this residence permit the employee must comply with the conditions applicable in that member state.

The conditions for residence in the Netherlands as an EU Blue Card holder are stricter than those for residence as a Highly Skilled Migrant. The employee must have a contract for highly qualified employment for at least one year, earning at least EUR 60,000 gross (in 2011). The employee must have completed a course of higher education lasting at least three years. The employee must prove this by having his diploma assessed by Nuffic. For a regulated profession, a competent authority will take decisions about the admission to that profession.

Advantages
One of the advantages of the EU Blue Card is that it is easier for an EU Blue Card holder and his family members to settle in another EU member state at a later date. After eighteen months foreign nationals who have an EU Blue Card are exempted from the provisional residence permit (MVV) requirement, if they want to work in another EU member State. In this second member state the employee must submit an application for a residence permit as a holder of an EU Blue Card. Each member state may implement the directive in slightly different ways. If someone holds a Blue Card in the Netherlands, this does not mean that the requirements are also met in other member states.

Another advantage is that after having stayed lawfully with the EU Blue Card holder in the Netherlands for two years, the family members may apply for a residence permit for ‘continued residence’. For other purposes of stay this is only possible after having stayed lawfully in the Netherlands for three years. The family members must have resided legally and continuously within the territory of an EU member state for at least five years, however. An employee who has stayed legally in the Netherlands as an EU Blue Card holder for two years may apply for the status of ‘long-term resident as a non-EU member country national’. He must have resided legally and continuously within EU territory for five years and must comply with the other conditions for this purpose of stay.

Highly skilled migrants from outside of the EU

A highly skilled migrant is a migrant who comes to the Netherlands to be employed, and has a gross annual income of at least €47,565, or €34,881 if he/she is under thirty. This income requirement does not apply if the employee enters service for certain functions in an educational or research institution. For information on the specific functions to which this clause applies, you can inquire at the IND office for labour and highly skilled migrants. When a foreign national has been granted residence in the Netherlands as a highly skilled migrant, the employer of the highly skilled migrant is not required to be in possession of a work permit for that foreign national.

Professional soccer players, ministers of religion, teachers of religion and prostitutes are not eligible for a residency as highly skilled migrant.
