Job description
I - International Relations and International Political Economy/Development Studies
The position combines teaching (60%) and research (40%) in the field of International Political Economy with an emphasis on issue areas related to Development Studies and North-South relations in particular. A regional emphasis on Africa or Latin America is welcomed. In teaching, candidates are expected to provide both BA-level courses and MA-level courses within the IPE track. Additionally, candidates must be able to contribute to basic introductory courses in areas such as IR Theory, political science, international organization, European integration, and social science research methodologies; as well as specialized courses related to their own research interests, and will supervise students on an individual basis. Participation in managerial committees related to the organization of the degree programmes or research grant applications will be expected. In research the candidate is expected to develop her/his own research projects (both individually and in small teams).

Requirements
The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary department, in
addition to activities in the more general area of International
Relations. The candidate ideally comes from an interdisciplinary
background of which International Relations, Political Science,
International Law or social sciences are component parts. The
candidate's qualities are demonstrated by:
- a completed PhD
- proven research results, supported by a list of publications
- further research potential and plans
- confirmed experience in academic teaching, at various levels and in various formats
- excellent demonstrable oral and written skills in English
- excellent social and communicative skills and immunity to stress
- being prepared to learn Dutch within a period of two years.

Conditions of employment
The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on
qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 3,195
gross per month (salary scale 11) to a maximum of € 4,970 gross per
month (salary scale 12) for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday
pay and 8,3% end-of-year gratification and participation in a pension
scheme for employees. This is a tenure position; the decision on tenure
will be taken on the basis of a formal assessment after two years.
The starting date for these appointments is preferably 1 August 2012.

Faculty of Arts
The Department of International Relations and International
Organization (IRIO) at the Faculty of Arts of the University of
Groningen offers a new fulltime position for Assistant Professor. The
Department of IRIO is committed to top tier research combined with high
quality education. This commitment to excellence is apparent at both the
undergraduate, graduate and PhD levels. IRIO, with over 30 staff
members, provides high quality, interdisciplinary and international
Bachelor and Master degree programmes. Students and staff study
international relations and the role of international organization in an
integrated manner from historical, political, economic and legal
angles. The Department provides an international working environment for
an increasing number of foreign students and research staff. Teaching
is organized in cooperation with staff members from the Department of
History, and the faculties of Law and Economics. The Bachelor and Master
degree programmes are taught in both English and Dutch. There are
currently over 1,000 students registered for IRIO programmes.
Additionally, the Department is responsible for the Erasmus Mundus
Master degree programme in Humanitarian Action, and the Research Master
programme Modern History and International Relations. Research in the
Department of IRIO is organised under the responsibility of the four
chairs of the Department, respectively: International Security;
International Political Economy; European Integration; and Global
Governance.
