The lecturers will be expected to play an active
role in the development and teaching of a new degree programme, the BA
in International Studies, offered at the Campus The Hague of Leiden
University, by the Faculty of Humanities. Teaching duties cover a broad
range of tutorials with the courses offered in the degree programme.
Students will be taught in mixed groups with specialized interests in
all of the regions and disciplines represented in the degree. In
addition, the lecturers will mark and assess student assignments and
exams, supervise student papers and theses, organize extra-curricular
activities, carry out pastoral duties, and contribute to the
administration of the programme. The lecturers are expected to be able
and willing to teach and supervise beyond their own specialization. In
time, the lecturers also will be given the opportunity to take full
responsibility for one or more courses in the degree.
- Recent Ph.D. in hand or a confirmed final examination (viva, oral defense) date before the start of the appointment;
- Formal training and expertise in the humanities or the social sciences, including but not limited to history, area studies, political science and international relations, economics, cultural and social disciplines, linguistics or related disciplines, and openness to interdisciplinary work;
- Comparative international outlook;
- Regional specialization is open;
- Preferable experience in teaching and supervision;
- Near-native speaker of English;
- Non-Dutch speaking individuals will be expected to learn Dutch within two years;
- Leiden University requires staff to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO). In case the successful applicant does not possess this qualification or its equivalent, the Institute will offer support in obtaining it.
