Job description

The position of lecturer/PhD candidate is a temporary job that is composed of 40 per cent teaching duties and 60 per cent research duties, in the field of International Relations; this includes the preparation and writing of a PhD thesis that must be completed within five years. In teaching, candidates are expected to be able to contribute to basic introductory courses in areas such as IR Theory, political science, international organization, European integration, and social science research methodologies; as well as specialized courses related to their own research interests, and will supervise students on an individual basis. In research the candidate is expected to conduct a PhD research, write a PhD thesis and obtain a doctorate.

The lecturer job description details the teaching duties, while the PhD candidate job description details the PhD research duties. Since different salary scales and different job performance standards apply, there shall be two separate appointments for reasons of legal status. After the first year there will be an assessment of the candidates' results and the progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.

The three lecturer/PhD candidates will be affiliated with and enrolled in the research training program of the Graduate School of Humanities. They will be supervised closely during their appointment. Additional didactical training is also part of the appointment. Based on the candidate's educational portfolio, previously acquired competences will be taken into consideration.

Candidates should submit a research proposal (max. 1500 words) related to one of the five themes:
- International Security
- European Integration
- Global Governance
- International Political Economy
- Humanitarian Action

Candidates are expected to complete a PhD dissertation within a five-year period. Candidates and their proposals will be judged on:
- individual research qualities of the candidate
- originality of the research proposal and relation to one of the themes
- quality of the proposed methodology including sources
- prospects of completion within five years
- feasibility of supervision from existing research fields within the Department of IR.

Requirements

The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary department, in addition to activities in the more general area of International Relations. The candidate ideally comes from an interdisciplinary background of which International Relations, Political Science, International Law or social sciences are component parts. The candidate's qualities are demonstrated by:
- university graduate
- MA degree in International Relations or related study with above-average results
- strong motivation to complete a PhD dissertation in five years
- proven affinity with chosen subject
- proven research abilities
- confirmed experience in (academic) teaching
- excellent demonstrable oral and written skills in English and Dutch
- excellent social and communicative skills and immunity to stress.

Conditions of employment

PhD part
The University of Groningen offers a salary of € 2,042 gross per month in the first year to € 2,612 gross per month in the fourth year for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday pay and 8,3% end-of-year gratification and participation in a pension scheme for employees. After the first year there will be an assessment of the candidates' results and the progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.

Lecturer part
The University of Groningen offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience starting from a minimum of € 2,379 gross per month to a maximum of € 3,755 gross per month (salary scale 10) for a full-time position, excluding 8% holiday pay and 8,3% end-of-year gratification and participation in a pension scheme for employees. After the first year there will be an assessment of the candidates' results and the progress of the project to decide whether the employment will be continued.

The starting date for these appointments is preferably August 1, 2012.

Faculty of Arts
The Department of International Relations and International Organization (IRIO) at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Groningen offers three new fulltime positions for Lecturer/PhD candidate. The Department of IRIO is committed to top tier research combined with high quality education. This commitment to excellence is apparent at both the undergraduate, graduate and PhD levels. IRIO, with over 30 staff members, provides high quality, interdisciplinary and international Bachelor and Master degree programmes. Students and staff study international relations and the role of international organization in an integrated manner from historical, political, economic and legal angles. The Department provides an international working environment for an increasing number of foreign students and research staff. Teaching is organized in cooperation with staff members from the Department of History, and the faculties of Law and Economics. The Bachelor and Master degree programmes are taught in both English and Dutch. There are currently over 1,000 students registered for IRIO programmes. Additionally, the Department is responsible for the Erasmus Mundus Master degree programme in Humanitarian Action, and the Research Master programme Modern History and International Relations. Research in the Department of IRIO is organised under the responsibility of the five chairs of the Department, respectively: International Security; International Political Economy; European Integration; Global Governance and Humanitarian Action.
