What makes the Dutch Dutch? Find out on the 5th of September! Expertise in Labour Mobility will hold again their introduction workshop for expats and expat partners new to the Netherlands.

This workshop provides the participant with all they need to know to make their stay in the Netherlands a success. It may not help to appreciate the taste of ‘dropjes’, but it will help you to value the Dutch directness slightly better!

Programme
09.00 – 09.30 welcome with coffee and tea

10.00 – 11.00 introduction to living in the Netherlands
11.00 – 12.15 cultural differences
12.15 – 13.15 typical Dutch lunch
13.15 – 14.30 introduction to working in the Netherlands
14.30 – 15.15 looking for work in the Netherlands
15.15 – 16.00 interactive Dutch language speed course
16.00 – 16.30 drinks

Price: The workshop takes place at our office in Rotterdam and takes a full day. Participation is 185,- Euro (ex. VAT) per person, including lunch and drinks.

Vacancy: Assistant Professor of English Language (1,0 fte)

You will work as Assistant Professor at the department of English Language and Culture, where you will teach English language and linguistics courses (including language skills) at BA and MA levels and supervise BA and MA theses. In addition to teaching and research, you will have administrative responsibilities. Your research will be embedded in the research institute CLS. You will participate working groups, committees and/or project groups at the department or faculty.
Work environment
The Faculty of Arts consists of ten departments in the areas of language and culture, history, history of arts, linguistics and business communication, which together cater for about 2,700 students and collaborate closely in teaching and research.

Research at the Faculty of Arts is embedded in two research institutes: the Institute for Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies (HLCS) and the Centre for Language Studies (CLS).

- you should hold a doctoral degree relevant to English language and linguistics;
- you are a native speaker of English, or have near-native command of English;
- you should have university teaching experience at various levels, and be able to contribute ideas on educational innovation;
- you have obtained the University Teaching Qualification (BKO), or are prepared to take courses in order to obtain this qualification in a relatively short time;
- you have built up an international network of academic contacts and have a strong research ambition as evidenced by publications and initiatives;
- you should have experience supervising students writing their Bachelor¿s or Master¿s theses, PhD candidates writing their dissertations, as well as other researchers;
- you should have the following competencies:: conceptual ability, situational awareness, presentation, result orientation and initiative.

We offer you:
- employment: 1,0 fte;
- a maximum gross monthly salary of € 4,970 based on a 38-hour working week;
- in addition to the salary: an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus;
- the starting salary will depend on qualifications and experience; salary scale 11/12;
- duration of the contract: 2 years, with the possibility of extension/permanent employment;
- you will be appointed as Assistant Professor Level 1 (UFO profile: Universitair Docent niveau 1) or 2 (UFO profile: Universitair Docent niveau 2), depending on qualifications and experience.

VACANCY: Four early-career University Lecturers to teach in the English language BA International Studies

The lecturers will be expected to play an active role in the development and teaching of a new degree programme, the BA in International Studies, offered at the Campus The Hague of Leiden University, by the Faculty of Humanities. Teaching duties cover a broad range of tutorials with the courses offered in the degree programme. Students will be taught in mixed groups with specialized interests in all of the regions and disciplines represented in the degree. In addition, the lecturers will mark and assess student assignments and exams, supervise student papers and theses, organize extra-curricular activities, carry out pastoral duties, and contribute to the administration of the programme. The lecturers are expected to be able and willing to teach and supervise beyond their own specialization. In time, the lecturers also will be given the opportunity to take full responsibility for one or more courses in the degree.


  • Recent Ph.D. in hand or a confirmed final examination (viva, oral defense) date before the start of the appointment;
  • Formal training and expertise in the humanities or the social sciences, including but not limited to history, area studies, political science and international relations, economics, cultural and social disciplines, linguistics or related disciplines, and openness to interdisciplinary work;
  • Comparative international outlook;
  • Regional specialization is open;
  • Preferable experience in teaching and supervision;
  • Near-native speaker of English;
  • Non-Dutch speaking individuals will be expected to learn Dutch within two years;
  • Leiden University requires staff to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO). In case the successful applicant does not possess this qualification or its equivalent, the Institute will offer support in obtaining it.
