In the framework of the TRANSMIC project, the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance (Maastricht University) and UNU-MERIT is recruiting a PhD researcher for a period of three years. You will work on a research project concerning Entrepreneurship and Migration. This project will explore the linkages between migration and entrepreneurism either in the immigrant destination country or in the origin country upon return. Supervisors for this project includeProf. Dr. Wim Naudé and Dr. Melissa Siegel. The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the PhD program in Economics and Governance www.merit.unu.edu/training/phd-programme-in-economics-and-governance/. The successful candidate will also participate in the research training sessions in the framework of the TRANSMIC ITN Marie Curie project.

Requirements

A master’s degree in economics, development studies, sociology or a related social science.

Project Description: Cyber-attacks have grown in number and sophistication, achieving unprecedented success in reaching their targets. Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) such as data exfiltration attacks are both dangerous and difficult to detect. These targeted and stealthy attacks using specifically developed malware circumvent classical detection systems based on signatures or statistical anomalies in network traffic. Only by looking in detail at the actual content of communication would it be possible to detect APTs. A method is thus needed to analyse the huge amount of data involved in an effective way.
SpySpot proposes a solution which combines deep packet analysis with visualization of the analysis results enabling an end user to easily spot anomalies created by APTS like digital espionage. In the deep packet analysis the meaning of communication is recovered using protocol syntax and semantics, abstraction brings additional structure to this meaning and anomaly detection finds patterns deviating from the norm. While automated analysis is needed to manage the huge amount of data, no automatic method can match the ability of the human mind in recognizing deviations and evaluating these. The analysis will thus support visualization of results for human-based evaluation and be able to take into account feedback on the discovered anomalies, such as discarding harmless ones in future traffic.
As a PhD student your tasks concern the following activities:

• carry out research within the project, in cooperation with the other parties involved;
• report on the results in papers and conference contributions;
• finishing a PhD thesis in four years;
• a small contribution to the teaching activities of the Visualization group may be asked.

Job description

We are seeking an early-stage researcher for a European Industrial Doctorates programme in advanced brain imaging using MRI. The project is a collaboration between the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands) and Siemens Medical Solutions based in Erlangen (Germany). Additional training will also be provided by the Rotterdam School of Management. The goal is to provide high-level modern training for physical scientists wishing to pursue a career in industry or academia. You will divide your time equally between Nijmegen and Erlangen, spending the first year of the project in Nijmegen. You will thus experience both an academic and a commercial environment. The project will use novel brain imaging techniques to make exhaustive examination possible within a fraction of the time needed only a few years ago. You will develop acquisition and analysis tools in Nijmegen and translate them into prototype applications in Erlangen. These will enable an analysis not only of brain anatomy, but also of brain connectivity. In the final stage of the project the tools developed will be utilised in a cohort of healthy volunteers to obtain normative values of brain anatomy and connectivity as functions of age and gender. The project offers an integrated training programme in MR-physics, neuroimaging and commercial and business skills, and will offer the researchers a broad range of career choices upon graduation.

Job description

Project: Breast cancer screening – from one-size-fits-all to a personalized risk-based approach
In virtually all population-based breast cancer screening programmes, the only risk factor – even though the strongest – used to define the target population is age. This ‘one-size-fits-all’ screening approach does not take advantage of the growing ability to predict individual variation in screening benefits and harms and to translate that information into better screening outcomes. In our project, we will model the impact of adapting breast cancer screening policy to a woman’s individual risk by collecting all relevant data on risk factors and obtaining a blood sample from the participants. In addition, we will make an inventory on communication, medico-legal and ethical considerations related to personalized risk-based screening and present a synthesis at an interdisciplinary expert meeting, along with results of the project, in order to discuss implications and recommendations for current vs. personalized risk-based screening policies. This project thus represents an essential first step towards the future, where more individualized approaches to screening are likely to become the new screening paradigm.
The PhD student on this project will collect information on risk factors and biomarkers in a screening cohort, develop a tailor-made risk prediction model and, subsequently, model the impact of adapting breast cancer screening policy to populations at varying levels of risk. In addition, the PhD student will be involved in the assessment of communication, medico-legal and ethical considerations related to personalized risk-based screening. The results will be reported in scientific publications (resulting in a PhD thesis) and presented at (inter)national conferences.

Research setting:
The PRISMA study (Personalized RISk-based Mammascreening) is part of the research group on Cancer Epidemiology at the Department for Health Evidence. The PRISMA study will be performed in collaboration with a consortium of (inter)national partners.

Job description

The number of older people is rising rapidly; in the Netherlands, it is expected to increase more among immigrants than among natives. Poor health, chronic diseases, and functional limitations are much more prevalent among these immigrant populations than among natives. Sociocultural differences make it especially difficult for healthcare organisations to reach older immigrants effectively. Immigrant-sensitive healthcare interventions are needed, requiring insight into underlying sociocultural mechanisms explaining differences in health and health behaviour between older natives and immigrants. To improve (preventive) healthcare delivery quality and effectiveness for older immigrants, and to deliver care tailored to their needs, research on the sociocultural mechanisms leading to their poorer health and health behaviours is needed. Therefore, Prof.dr Anna Nieboer, Dr. Jane Cramm and Dr. Marleen Foets from the Socio-Medical Sciences (SMW) group within the institute of Health Policy and Management (iBMG) study the interplay between the influences of perceptions of ageing and the social environment on health and health behaviours among older Dutch natives and immigrants.
In 2014 pilot studies (focus groups and quantitative research) will be conducted among older natives, Turks, Surinamese, and Moroccans in the Netherlands. Using the national population register, a sample of Dutch, Turks, Surinamese, Moroccans independently living older adults (age > 70 years) residing in Rotterdam, Amsterdam, and The Hague will be identified for inclusion in our study. These people will be surveyed in 2015 and 2016.
For this study, we are searching for a PhD student. As a PhD student you contribute to literature review, gathering and analysing data. In addition, you will be involved in teaching activities within the bachelor Health, Policy & Management and in the master Health Care Management.

Requirements

The successful applicant for this position is expected to have a master’s degree in a relevant field, such as Health Sciences or other humanities like sociology. Furthermore, he or she should have good writing skills in Dutch and English and a strong motivation for doing scholarly research in the field of health care. We prefer candidates with great skills and hands-on experience with doing empirical research, quantitative research methods and data analysis. A firm grasp of Dutch is required.

A PhD student will initially receive a temporary contract for 1.5 years in order to assess his compatibility. When you prove to be an asset, you will receive a second temporary contract for 2.5 years. Remuneration will be in accordance with the PhD scale set by the CAO NU. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by both lower as well as upper motor neuron degeneration. Recent advances in MR imaging have made it feasible to examine in ever increasing detail the upper motor neuron effects in ALS, enabling the in vivo examination of neurodegenerative effects on both the structure as well as the connectivity architecture of the brain. This project concerns investigating the integrity of the motor network in ALS using MR imaging. You will acquire multiple forms of morphological and connectivity data in ALS patients and healthy controls, covering high-field structural and functional connectivity data (3T, 7T, T1, Spectroscopy, Diffusion Weighted Imaging, rs-fMRI) and analyze this data with graph analytical tools, examining the effects of structural damage to the brain’s functional dynamics. Your research should result in scientific papers in international journals, and a dissertation.

We are looking for motivated candidate, who is enthusiastic about brain (dys)connectivity.  You should have a M.Sc. degree in a relevant discipline, such as neuroscience, artificial intelligence, informatics, physics, or medicine. Job description

Hyperthermia is the application of elevated temperatures (41-45°C) to tumour tissue and is applied in combination with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy to improve tumour control. Hyperthermia can be administered before, during or after radiotherapy/chemotherapy. The sensitizing effect of hyperthermia depends on both the realized tumor temperatures and the order of application. In the hyperthermia community there is no univocal policy about the sequence of radiotherapy and hyperthermia and different institutes apply different treatment schemes. This research project “Towards biological treatment planning in radiotherapy combined with hyperthermia to improve clinical outcome” aims to find the optimal order of application of radiotherapy and hyperthermia and thereby further improve the effectiveness of clinical hyperthermia. This will be investigated using sophisticated treatment planning computer models, in which the combined effect of hyperthermia and radiotherapy is modeled. For accurate modeling knowledge about biological tissue parameters is necessary, which will be obtained from cell line and animal experiments for combined treatments with radiotherapy and hyperthermia.

Requirements

For this project we have vacancies for two highly motivated PhD candidates. One of them will carry out the cell line and animal experiments and the other candidate will perform the computer modeling part of the project. Candidate 1 should have an MSc degree in (medical) biology or a related background. The candidate should have good command of English. Many real-world applications are complex and distributed in nature in that they involve a multitude of independent decision makers who attempt to achieve their own goals. It is well-known that strategic choices often result in outcomes that are inefficient for the society as a whole. Algorithmic game theory has shed new light on various aspects of such situations of strategic interaction. However, most studies assume that the decision makers correspond to “isolated" entities who make their choices based on purely selfish incitements. This assumption is overly simplistic: Decision makers are often motivated by other-regarding preferences such as altruism, spite or fairness and typically exhibit complex social relationships. The goal of the project is to gain an accurate understanding of such social interactions in games.
Relevant research aspects of the PhD project include (but are not limited to) inefficiency of equilibria, complexity of games, algorithmic mechanism design, etc.
The PhD candidate will be given the possibility to pursue part of her/his studies abroad, to attend international doctoral schools, conferences and workshops, and to participate in the national PhD programme organized by the LNMB (Dutch Network on the Mathematics of Operations Research).

Requirements

The PhD candidate is required to have a master's degree in mathematics or computer science and should have an excellent background in combinatorial optimization and algorithms. Ideally, the candidate has already worked in the area of algorithmic game theory and demonstrated the ability to pursue independent research. Job description

The project is funded by a Dutch Cancer Foundation (KWF) and is entitled ‘Novel Protein  Kinases Targets In IGF-1 and EGF Receptor - Mediated Drug Resistant Breast Cancer’.

Treatment of breast cancer has improved with the introduction of anti-estrogen therapy. Yet a large percentage (>40%) of tamoxifen treated breast cancers eventually become resistant to tamoxifen, and also resistance to other anti-estrogens has been reported. Resistance to anti-estrogens has been linked to increased expression and/or activation of various receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) such as EGFR, IGF-1R and HER2. This may lead to downstream phosphorylation of the estrogen receptor and insensitivity to the antagonistic action of anti-estrogens.
We have recently established relevant models for anti-estrogen resistant breast cancer by ectopically expressing the human EGFR and IGF-1R in human MCF7 breast cancer cells. When stimulated with EGF or IGF1 respectively, these cells are almost completely resistant to inhibition of estradiol-induced cell proliferation by tamoxifen and fulvestrant. Using genome-wide protein kinase and phosphatase siRNA-based screening we identified >35 kinases and phosphatases in MCF7/IGF-1R cells that reversed the IGF1-induced tamoxifen resistance. These candidates may represent potentially novel drug targets for anti-estrogen resistant breast cancer. The goals of this project are to characterize these novel drug targets with respect to their role in tamoxifen resistance, breast cancer cell proliferation and survival in 3D models in vitro, and to validate the role of a selected number of these drug target candidates in control of cell proliferation, tamoxifen resistance, and tumor progression in vivo, in xenograft tumor models in mice.

Requirements

We seek a talented and highly motivated candidate with proven experience in cell and molecular biology, cell signalling and light microscopy. The candidate should have a MSc degree in (Medical) Biology, Life Science Technology, Bio-Pharmaceutical Sciences or any other closely related discipline. Job description

Tumors often display altered metabolic characteristics that are exclusive to the cancer cells and thus, can be targeted for efficient treatment.
The zebrafish is emerging as a valid model to study processes underlying cancer and provides an ideal setting to conduct chemical genetic screens for synthetic lethal interactions in the intact organism.
The tumor suppressor LKB1 is mutated in a familial cancer-predisposition syndrome and in over 30% of lung adenocarcinomas, one of the most common human tumors with a very poor prognosis. LKB1 is a serine-threonine kinase that phosphorylates the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a key energy checkpoint in the cell. AMPK activation leads to growth suppression through several pathways including inhibition of the mTOR pathway. Human tumors with LKB1 mutations exhibit fast metabolic rate, increased invasiveness and poor prognosis. We have recently shown that Lkb1 is critical to maintain energy homeostasis in zebrafish. lkb1 zebrafish mutants are embryonic-viable (in contrast to mice), exhibit deregulated metabolism and fast metabolic rate, a characteristic of tumors cells.
We will use our lkb1 zebrafish model as a discovery platform in chemical genetic synthetic-lethal screens and to resolve the LKB1 network in control of metabolism.

Job description

This full-time position of lecturer/PhD researcher is a temporary appointment for five years. The successful candidate is expected to spend 40 percent of her/his time on teaching, and 60 percent on a PhD project in one of the research areas in American Studies mentioned above. For legal reasons (related to the different salary scales and job performance requirements pertaining to each position), there will formally be two separate appointments. After the first year of employment there will be an assessment of the appointee's teaching performance and research, on the basis of which it will be decided whether the appointment will be continued.

Candidates are expected to complete a PhD dissertation within the five-year period.

This PhD position is part of the ERC-project ‘Monitoring modernity: a comparative analysis of practices of social imagination in the monitoring of global flows of goods, capital and persons’ (MONITORING). The project aims to study institutions specialized in visualizing society. It connects more encompassing ‘modern social imaginaries’ with ‘social imagination’, i.e., the everyday work of the production of images of climate, the economy, capital flows and migrant mobilities.
This PhD project focuses on the formation of the national imaginary in relation to immigration. This involves analyses of institutionalized forms of measuring belonging to national societies. Such measurements pertain mostly to the integration of immigrants, where socio-economic or cultural indicators are used to assess the degree to which immigrants ‘participate in society’. The project analyzes such measurements as ways of producing images of belonging that feed into and are further shaped by policy and public debate. They can be treated as specialized ways of securing collective memory and of visualizing society. This project analyzes a selection of population registries and censuses, and focuses on the specific institutions (statistical agencies, research projects) that visualize the position of immigrants in various EU-countries. Also, independent social scientific studies (e.g., conducted at universities) will be analyzed with the help of (amongst others) STS approaches and approaches from Visual studies. Multi-sited ethnography and (where possible) descriptive statistical methods will be used.
The PhD candidate will do fieldwork in various EU countries for periods of some weeks each. The PhD candidate will be based at Erasmus University Rotterdam.
The PhD candidate will contribute by:
1) conducting ethnographic research and discourse analysis and, where possible, combining this with correspondence analysis and/or (conceptual) network analysis
2) actively participating in the research team of the MONITORING project, including participation in a regular research and reading seminar and active and critical involvement in the other subprojects
3) participating in the Sociology research community, both at Erasmus University and internationally, through publishing and presenting research results in the form of articles in international peer reviewed journals, papers at international conferences and books at international academic publishers
4) participating in teaching (social theory and philosophy of science) and the supervision of MA-thesis students on this research project
Intensive training will, amongst others, be provided by the project leader, Dr. W. Schinkel, and by participation in the project’s research and reading seminar.

Requirements

Applicants should have completed a Master’s degree in Sociology, Science studies, Visual studies or another related discipline. The applicant should have very good apprehension of English; apprehension of other languages is an advantage. Experience with doing both ethnographic research and descriptive statistical research is regarded as an advantage as well. An academic attitude of critical curiosity is a prerequisite. An engagement with the public relevance of social scientific research is much welcomed as well.

Conditions of employment

The starting date for the position is 1 September 2012. The initial contract will be running for a term of 1,5 years, which – depending on performance, including a literature review – will be extended with a second term of 2,5 years. The conditions of employment correspond with the CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten (CAO NU). The Erasmus University offers a salary of € 2.042,- gross per month in the first year up to a maximum of € 2.612,- gross per month in the final year in accordance with the Promovendus scale of CAO NU. Salary is based on a fulltime occupation. Objective of the temporary 4-year position is the production of a thesis leading to a PhD degree. Candidates are to submit yearly progress report to the faculty’s standing committee for research.
