VACANCY- PhD Position in Migration and Entrepreneurship - TRANSMIC ITN Marie Curie project


Job description

In the framework of the TRANSMIC project, the Maastricht Graduate School of Governance (Maastricht University) and UNU-MERIT is recruiting a PhD researcher for a period of three years. You will work on a research project concerning Entrepreneurship and Migration. This project will explore the linkages between migration and entrepreneurism either in the immigrant destination country or in the origin country upon return. Supervisors for this project includeProf. Dr. Wim Naudé and Dr. Melissa Siegel. The PhD candidate will be enrolled in the PhD program in Economics and Governance www.merit.unu.edu/training/phd-programme-in-economics-and-governance/. The successful candidate will also participate in the research training sessions in the framework of the TRANSMIC ITN Marie Curie project.

Requirements

A master’s degree in economics, development studies, sociology or a related social science.
Proven track record working in the area of migration.
Field experience is an asset.
Strong qualitative and quantitative skills are an asset.
You should have an excellent command of English (Academic IELTS score of 7.5 or higher; or TOEFL Internet-based test score of 113 or higher).
Strong analytical capacity.
Good organisational skills.
Affinity with work in an interdisciplinary and highly international environment.
Willingness and proven ability to work in a team.
In light of the mobility requirements set by the European Commission for this project, you must NOT have lived in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to taking up the position.

Job description

Tasks:University College Maastricht (UCM) is a Liberal Arts and Sciences bachelor’s program which offers students a broad range of courses to choose from, covering all scientific disciplines.
As the Assistant of the International Relations Office (IRO), you will help to ensure that outgoing and incoming exchange students receive accurate and useful information relating to study abroad questions. With regard to our outgoing students you will be primarily responsible for all registration matters pertaining to study abroad e.g.: application information from our partner universities. You will also be responsible for the whole process of registering (including residence permit, housing, course registration, etcetera) our incoming students. In short: you will serve as their point of contact at UCM. You are responsible for all administrative tasks required within the process of incoming students (SAP-SLM, database). Other tasks will include organizing special events for both incoming and outgoing students, update student files and processes and archive all decisions made by IRO.

Requirements

Job requirements: MBO+ education and working level; experience with or affinity for students and the support of educational processes. We are looking for someone who is accurate, result oriented, can work independently, service minded/oriented, but above all customer friendly. The language of communication at UCM is English, therefore an impeccable proficiency in English (orally and written) is needed.

Conditions of employment

Conditions: Temporary appointment of 12 months. After this period, extension of the appointment is possible. Gross salary will be between €2026,- and €2736,- on a fulltime base conform scale 7 (UFO profile medewerker studentzaken, niveau 3).

Job description

High quality research in the field of International Economics/Open Macroeconomics, in cooperation with the existing group.
Teaching (in English) in the area of international economics and macroeconomics in bachelor and in master programmes. Education is performed within small groups according to the Problem Based Learning principle. We strive to excel in teaching and in innovative teaching methods.

Requirements

The applicant is expected to hold a PhD from a recognized institution, and to be motivated by a dynamic team. Additional knowledge in quantitative methods and teaching experience would constitute an asset. Potential candidates should already have proved research abilities by publishing one or two papers in well established journals.

Job description

During the last decades, the division of Balance Disorders and Dizziness at the ENT department of the Maastricht University Medical Centre, has gained special expertise in medicine, biology and physics and developed one of the largest experimental diagnostic laboratories in the world for vestibular disorders. Through this, the department has acquired an international top position in the field of scientific research, diagnostics and treatment of diseases of the vestibular system with numerous international contacts and cooperations. The greatest challenges at this moment are the development of a vestibular implant (an artificial vestibular organ) and the ongoing development of more sensitive and specific diagnostic tests.

The School for Mental Health and Neuroscience, MHeNS, focuses on translational research on neurodegenerative disorders. We work closely together with clinicians of the academic hospital and psychiatric institutions. Our school is organized into three research divisions: Cognitive Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neuroscience (Prof. Dr. Frans Verhey) focuses on Cognitive development & aging, Cognitive disorders and Biopsychological mechanisms as well as learning. Mental Health (Prof. Dr. Inez Germeys) has its focus on the mechanisms through which interactions between individuals and their environments contribute to the development of major psychiatric disorders and somatic co-morbidity. Neuroscience (Prof. Dr. Harry Steinbusch) the focus of neuroscience is strictly related to mechanisms in neurodegeneration and plasticity. The major emphasis is on fundamental neuroscientific research on a variety of translational questions. We are bridging clinical questions to animal models for Depression and Neurodegeneration.

The strength of our School is situated in the translational aspects of fundamental neuroscience towards applied neurodegenerative and neurological neuropsychiatric strategies. We work with specific animal models and large cohort of patients. All focused on the development of new therapeutic strategies.

Project
The aim of the project is to discover novel microRNAs implicated in heart failure induced by the metabolic risk factors (hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia), unravel their biological role, and study their therapeutic prospects for treating metabolic risk induced diseases, with a particular focus on heart failure and ocular diseases. Methods include, omics, bioinformatics, rodent experiments and molecular work.
This project is a collaborative project (exchange of people) between Maastricht University (Netherlands), Santaris Pharma (MicroRNA medicines, Denmark) and Omics/bioinformatical centre (GIGA, Liège, Belgium).
