Job description

Eindhoven University of Technology has a vacancy for a:

PhD Perinatal fetal heart-rate variability monitoring based on Doppler ultrasound

in the Signal Processing Systems group (SPS), department of Electrical Engineering.

The Department Electrical Engineering (EE) is one of the nine departments of the Eindhoven University of Technology and provides BSc and MSc programs in Electrical Engineering. The department has nine research groups and has research collaborations with other departments at TU/e as well as with a large number of other universities and companies, both within the Netherlands and internationally. The department has approximately 350 employees and 600 students.

Project description

Birth is one of the most traumatic experiences a human (fetal) heart faces during life. Monitoring the fetal heart during delivery can therefore yield critical information for the clinical staff with respect to the status of the fetus. Recently, the Signal Processing Systems group of the Electrical Engineering department of the TU/e and its partners Philips Research and Máxima Medical Center have obtained funding for a PhD position to investigate how to improve the real-time assessment of the fetal status during delivery. This research will be part of a larger fetal monitoring research project, covering many aspects of fetal wellbeing.

The project will focus on heart-rate variability based on Doppler ultrasound. At late stages of labor, the quality of Doppler ultrasound can be suboptimal due to various reasons, often causing the clinician to switch to the invasive scalp electrode for heart-rate measurements. This project will aim at improving quality of Doppler ultrasound during labor, so as to obviate the need for the scalp electrode. Ultrasound imaging may be used as a reference data source, while on the other hand the fetal ECG may provide additional useful information to obtain good quality beat-to-beat heart-rate variability measurements. Furthermore, continuous monitoring of the umbilical chord with Doppler ultrasound imaging is considered to detect whenever it may be blocked during delivery. Ultrasound will be the main source of information, possibly supported with additional fetal ECG recordings. The Doppler ultrasound findings will be compared to electrophysiological measurements (scalp electrode), which are currently the most reliable source of heart rate variability information.

Requirements

Candidates for the PhD position should have:

. a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering/telecommunications,  (Applied) Physics, Biomedical Engineering or related disciplines with excellent grades.

. good analytic capabilities

. good mathematical skills

. knowledge of signal processing and systems is beneficial

. knowledge of ultrasound is beneficial

. communication skills are very important in this multi-disciplinary project with scientists, engineers and doctors

. reliable

. independent

. good organization skills

Conditions of employment

We offer a challenging job at a dynamic and ambitious university through a fixed-term appointment for the period of 4 years. The research in this project must be concluded with the attainment of a Ph.D. degree. A salary is offered starting at € 2083.-per month (gross) in the first year, increasing up to EUR 2664.- per month (gross) in the last year. Job description

    Project Description: Cyber-attacks have grown in number and sophistication, achieving unprecedented success in reaching their targets. Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) such as data exfiltration attacks are both dangerous and difficult to detect. These targeted and stealthy attacks using specifically developed malware circumvent classical detection systems based on signatures or statistical anomalies in network traffic. Only by looking in detail at the actual content of communication would it be possible to detect APTs. A method is thus needed to analyse the huge amount of data involved in an effective way.
    SpySpot proposes a solution which combines deep packet analysis with visualization of the analysis results enabling an end user to easily spot anomalies created by APTS like digital espionage. In the deep packet analysis the meaning of communication is recovered using protocol syntax and semantics, abstraction brings additional structure to this meaning and anomaly detection finds patterns deviating from the norm. While automated analysis is needed to manage the huge amount of data, no automatic method can match the ability of the human mind in recognizing deviations and evaluating these. The analysis will thus support visualization of results for human-based evaluation and be able to take into account feedback on the discovered anomalies, such as discarding harmless ones in future traffic.
    As a PhD student your tasks concern the following activities:
    • carry out research within the project, in cooperation with the other parties involved;
    • report on the results in papers and conference contributions;
    • finishing a PhD thesis in four years;
    • a small contribution to the teaching activities of the Visualization group may be asked.

    Requirements

    Requirements:We are looking for a candidate who meets the following requirements:
    • a Master degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, or closely related discipline;
    • a strong interest in information visualization, human computer interaction, and security;
    • excellent analytic, creative, and implementation skills;
    • ability to work in a team, cooperate both with academic and industrial partners;
    • fluent in spoken and written English.

    Conditions of employment

    Appointment and salary:We offer:
    • a full-time temporary appointment for a period of 4 years, with an intermediate evaluation after 9 months;
    • a gross salary of € 2,062 per month in the first year increasing up to € 2,638 per month in the fourth year;
    • a broad package of fringe benefits (e.g. excellent technical infrastructure, the possibility of child daycare and excellent sport facilities).

    PhD student and Post-Doc: Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (C-MRI ASTRON)

    Project description

    Dynamic contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) permits analyzing hemodynamic processes, opening up new important diagnostic possibilities for several diseases. At the Signal processing Systems (SPS) Group of the Eindhoven University of Technology, we are focusing on development of new diagnostic tools for optimal management of congestive heart failure patients. In fact, efficient therapies are available, but the optimal selection of patients and treatments is complicated by the poor predictive value of the existing non-invasive diagnostics. By this project we propose a novel minimally-invasive method for the assessment of the transpulmonary circulation, providing doctors with a new powerful diagnostic tool.

    DCE-MRI in the right and left side of the heart will be optimized to extract two reliable indicator dilution curves (IDCs), whose analysis by advanced signal processing and mathematical modeling is expected to permit the assessment of the transpulmonary circulation, providing accurate quantification of both pulmonary blood volume and extravascular lung water.

    Requirements

    We are seeking an enthusiastic candidate who has been graduated from a master program (MSc) in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Biomedical Engineering. Excellent communication skills and fluency in written and spoken English are essential.

    The candidate should have strong background in at least one of the following areas:

    - Signal processing

    - Image analysis

    - Hemodynamic modeling

    - Magnetic resonance imaging
