The BA in Russian Studies and the MA in Russian and Eurasian Studies target the study of the Russian Federation in its historical and contemporary context. The programme consists of two main elements: language and culture, and history, politics and economy. The BA is mostly taught and examined in Dutch, the MA exclusively in English.

Duties and Responsibilities

• The lecturer will be expected to play an active role in the development and teaching of the programmes in Russian Studies (BA) and Russian and Eurasian Studies (MA).
  
• His / her main responsibility will be to teach Russian domestic and foreign policies, with a focus on the post-communist era.
  
• The candidate will also participate in the BA programme in International Studies.
  
• Additionally, the candidate is expected to mark and assess student assignments and exams, supervise student papers and theses.
  

Requirements

• MA in either Russian Studies, International Relations or other relevant disciplines, plus recent Ph.D. in hand or a confirmed final examination (viva, oral defense) date before the start of the appointment (for the position of university lecturer).
  
• MA in either Russian Studies, International Relations or other relevant disciplines (for the position of lecturer).
  
• Preferable experience in teaching and supervision concerning Russian foreign policy and international relations.
  
• Native of near-native speaker of English.
  
• Active and passive command of the Russian language.
  
• Leiden University requires staff to obtain the Basic Teaching Qualification (BKO). In case the successful applicant does not possess this qualification or its equivalent, the Institute will offer support in obtaining it.
  

Terms of Employment

The appointment is for 19 hours per week in temporary employment for three years. The position corresponds to the position of (Universitair) Docent in the University system of job profiles (UFO).
The salary is in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Association of Dutch universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. The salary will be between the gross minimum of € 2.427,- (scale 10) and gross maximum of €  4.462,- (scale 11) for a full working week. Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8,3%. The successful candidate is expected to commence employment on 1 September 2013.

Job description

The Faculty of Humanities invites applications for an Assistant Professor Politics of the USSR and its Successor States.
The candidate has a doctorate in her/his specialty, or is in the final process of getting a doctorate; and she or he has an excellent record of academic publications and of teaching at university level that is commensurate to her/his current career stage.
The candidate should be able to teach courses related to her or his specialty, on BA and MA levels, but she/he should also be able to broadly contribute to the general teaching program of our Eastern European studies program, and of the European Studies Section as a whole. She or he should also be ready to take over some administrative tasks for the Section, and to contribute to the supervision of BA, MA and PhD students.

Tasks

• Teaching and developing teaching activities both as part of and outside the European Studies-programme;
• (co-)supervising Bachelor's and Master's theses;
• independently conducting research in the area mentioned, resulting in contributions to leading international publications;
• if possible co-supervising PhD candidates;
• making a contribution to raising contract and indirect funding.

Requirements

• Relevant PhD degree, or in the final process of obtaining one;
• experience in research and excellent research skills, evidenced by publications in renowned international journals or in book form;
• teaching experience at university level (preferably BA and MA level) and demonstrable didactic abilities and/or training, evidenced by an educational portfolio;
• experience with digital and audio-visual equipment; affinity with ICT in academic education;
• team spirit and capable of functioning at all levels of more than one study programme;
• willingness to develop in a multidisciplinary capacity in order to be able to participate in multiple areas of the Faculty's curriculum;
• organisational experience and skills;
• thorough knowledge of Dutch and English; non-native Dutch speakers must achieve fluency in Dutch within two years.

Conditions of employment

The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of two years with a two-year extension after satisfactory performance. There will be no permanent position for this position. Gross monthly salary will range from €3,195 (scale 11) to €4,970 (scale 12), based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week).

The Groningen Research Institute for the Study of Culture is one of the three official research institutes of the Faculty of Arts. Research at ICOG represents many periods and disciplines: history and theory of literature, film/TV, theatre, music, visual arts and architecture, research in artistic media and in history and theory of artistic policy-making and organisation, as well as journalism, political, socio-economic, cultural and intellectual history and international relations.
Research at ICOG is characterised by its interdisciplinary nature, which means that the research groups are organised in such a way as to encourage links - both synchronic and diachronic - between them. Within the ICOG there are three main research groups: Politics, Media and Nation-building, Cultures and Identity, and Society and the Arts.

Job description

This postdoc project applies and tests theories about the construction, representation and narrativization of traumatic histories in the context of the East-European memory of the Soviet imperial past(s). The project analyses the problematic assimilation and contamination of the memories of the imperial oppression, Soviet Terror, and the collapse of the Soviet Empire into collective narratives of self that are simultaneously coherent and disturbed. The working hypothesis is that literary texts in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine have played important but different roles in filling post-traumatic gaps and disseminating culturally shared memories. The description of these phenomena will benefit from critical analyses from the perspective of trauma theory. The one-year project will result in a series of publications in peer-reviewed journals in Slavonic studies and trauma studies.

The position is part of the research project "The Imperialism of Martyrdom: Suffering, Agency, and Memory in Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian Films and Novels", coordinated by dr Sander Brouwer of the Dept. of Slavic Languages and Cultures. It is part of the research project "Memory at War: Cultural Dynamics in Poland, Russia, and Ukraine", which has been made possible as a result of the award of a 2009 HERA JRP grant (Humanities in the European Research Area, Joint Research Program) in the category "Cultural Dynamics: Inheritance and Identity". The University of Cambridge is leading this project, it is furthermore accomplished in association with the Universities of Bergen, Helsinki, and Tartu.

Qualifications

• PhD in Slavic Studies or History
• competence in cultural trauma studies
• active knowledge of at least one, and passive knowledge of at least two of the languages involved
• excellent academic record (as shown by a list of examination marks); proven ability to plan and prioritize work and to work to and meet deadlines; strong commitment to excellence in research
• ability to develop creative approaches to problem solving; creativity, curiosity, and ambition; proactive attitude; ability to implement new methods and ideas
• excellent communication skills: effective paper writing skills (demonstrated by publications) and ample experience with delivering presentations
• excellent command of the English language (oral and written).

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers the postdoc a salary of € 3,088 (scale 10, step 6) gross per month for a full-time position. The position requires residence in Groningen. This position is defined according to the UFO function profile 'researcher'.

Employment basis: Temporary for specified period.
Duration of the contract: One year.
Maximum hours per week: 30-32 hours.

We are looking for an enthousiastic PhD student for the following research. The breaking up of the former USSR led to profound social and economic changes in those areas of Russia, White Russia, the Baltic Republics and Ukraine that are important to geese that migrate in winter to Western Europe. In the countryside much arable agriculture decreased, especially north of 55 degrees north but also in the steppe area in the south, livestock numbers decreased profoundly, river valleys get overgrown and hunting regimes change. The PhD student will study land use changes at the hand of sociological surveys, census outcomes and satellite imagery with the aim to understand changes in the migratory routes and population development of Barnacle geese, White fronted geese and Bean geese, and to make wellfounded predictions under different scenario developments. This has important implications for goose conservation.

We ask that the selected candidate should have a Master’s degree, or equivalent, in ecology with proven abilities to interpret remotely sensed imageries. Preferably she or he can read and speak Russian. A driving license is a necessity and so is the willingness and ability to travel independently in the named countries. Sound knowledge of spatial statistics is important as well as proven publication skills.

We offer a full time position (38 hours), initially for 18 months. If your suitability in this position is apparent, the period of employment will be extended to the remainder of your PhD study, with another 30 months. Gross salary starts at 2042 Euro per month during the first year, increasing to 2612 Euro per month during the fourth year. Commencing as soon as possible. The candidate will be based at the Resource Ecology Group in Wageningen.
