Job in HOLLAND: PhD student: Patient-specific bone repositioning using 3-D planning

Job description

Bone deformities lead to impaired daily life activities, sick leave and disability resulting in high healthcare costs. Current surgical reconstruction techniques are either inaccurate or expensive, yet do not guarantee adequate treatment. In a European consortium, consisting of universities and industry, we will develop affordable surgical techniques for accurate repositioning of bone segments using patient-specific implants. The project delivers 1) 3D planning and implant design software, 2) implants that force accurate positioning and fixation of bone segments, 3) implants optimized for shape and load, and 4) optimized production procedures. The implants will render treatment minimally invasive. Within the part of the project related to this job opening we will develop and study image analysis methods for 3D planning and implant design.

Requirements

You have a background in informatics or physics at the M.Sc. level and a keen interest in developing advanced techniques in medical research. Experience in the field of development of image analysis methods is a preference. You have the skills to communicate with both clinicians and engineers and you can make the link between the image analysis methods and biomechanical/medical practice. You have good organizational skills and an excellent ability to express yourself in English.

Within the climate and air quality program of SRON, you will work on the development, manufacturing and testing of immersed diffraction gratings for several space missions. These optical components are key technology enabling a next generation of spaceborne spectrometers in the short wave infrared wavelength range for the detection of greenhouse gases and pollutants. These instruments are being developed for the European Space Agency by consortia of European industries and research institutes.
The candidate will perform the following tasks:
  • Act as system engineer in flight hardware delivery projects;
  • Act as assembly, integration and verification manager in flight hardware delivery projects;
  • Analyze optical performance test results;
  • Prepare documentation for reviews according to ECSS standard;
  • Manage supplier contacts.

Functie-eisen

  • At least master of science level, a Ph.D. degree in applied Physics is preferred;

Job description

In the coming decades, dementia will pose an increasing burden
on society: the number of persons suffering from late-onset Alzheimer’s
disease is expected to quadruple by 2050. There is thus an urgent need
to develop effective preventive and therapeutic strategies. This
requires tools to identify individuals at risk or to recognise patients
ideally very early in the disease process.   

Brain MRI is one of the most promising, non-invasive and relatively
low-cost techniques to gain information on the multitude of processes
involved in dementia. There is increasing insight that specific
(patterns of) image markers reflect certain pathways contributing to the
development of Alzheimer's disease.

The objective of the PhD programme is to develop a new methodology for
the extraction of biomarkers that characterise early stage dementia. The
developed methodology will be based on ASL, fMRI and other MRI
modalities. It must especially compensate for the unavoidable patient
motion and quantify the precision of the obtained biomarkers. The
methods will be integrated in a clinical prototype workstation.

Requirements

We are looking for a talented and enthusiastic candidate with an
MSc degree in (applied) Physics, Mathematics, or a related subject.
He/she must have an excellent knowledge of written and spoken English,
and a top 20% ranking during his/her BSc and MSc. Experience in image
processing is helpful. Good programming skills in MATLAB and C are a
necessity.

Job description

Clouds and water vapour are very important elements of the climate system. The development of diverse remote sensing instrumentation and measurement methods to retrieve a complete view of the profile of atmospheric properties has met with considerable success. The state of the art in ground-based remote sensing is, however, still limited in its ability to quantify (or even handle) the presence of drizzle, an important element of the process determining cloud lifetime and not well taken into account in climate models.
In this project we will develop a multi-sensor optimal estimation-based framework for estimating profiles of cloud optical and microphysical properties, including the quantification of drizzle. The method will be developed and tested using a combination of simulators and real cloud data from the CESAR/Cabauw multi-instrument measurement site. In addition, satellite data will be used in the evaluation of the cloud property output of the algorithm.

Requirements

Applicants must have a PhD in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Meteorology, or another appropriate field. Prior experience in the fields of atmospheric remote sensing and/or data assimilation is desirable. The candidate must be able to verbally communicate and write in English at an appropriate level.

Job description

ALS is a neurodegenerative disease characterized by both lower as well as upper motor neuron degeneration. Recent advances in MR imaging have made it feasible to examine in ever increasing detail the upper motor neuron effects in ALS, enabling the in vivo examination of neurodegenerative effects on both the structure as well as the connectivity architecture of the brain. This project concerns investigating the integrity of the motor network in ALS using MR imaging. You will acquire multiple forms of morphological and connectivity data in ALS patients and healthy controls, covering high-field structural and functional connectivity data (3T, 7T, T1, Spectroscopy, Diffusion Weighted Imaging, rs-fMRI) and analyze this data with graph analytical tools, examining the effects of structural damage to the brain’s functional dynamics. Your research should result in scientific papers in international journals, and a dissertation.

We are looking for motivated candidate, who is enthusiastic about brain (dys)connectivity.  You should have a M.Sc. degree in a relevant discipline, such as neuroscience, artificial intelligence, informatics, physics, or medicine. Job description

Cosmic particles with energies of up to 1020 eV pose a challenge as their source is a complete mystery; they are currently investigated at the international Pierre Auger Observatory, located in Argentina. The particle measurements can be strongly disturbed by thunderstorms, because the electric fields in a thunderstorm can accelerate shower particles and create ionization avalanches — but how large is the effect for a given electric field, or for a given proximity of a storm? A complementary question arises for thunderstorms, one of the most energetic and least understood processes in our atmosphere. Could cosmic-particle showers play a role in lightning inception? Which physical mechanisms are precisely at work when cosmic particle showers impact a cloud? Which particle energies make a significant impact, and is their number density sufficient?
To answer these questions, we now seek to hire 2 PhD students within the project 'Cosmic Lightning'. One student will work on the interface between observations and simulations and be based at the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI) in Groningen, and one will mainly develop models and be based at the Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica in Amsterdam (CWI) within the group on Multiscale Dynamics.

In the observations the interplay between ultra-high-energy cosmic particles and thunderstorm activity in the atmosphere is investigated using radio-detection techniques at the major international infrastructures LOFAR and Pierre Auger Observatory. The theoretical student will join the particle shower models (roughly for particle energies of 1020 to 106 eV) available at KVI with gas discharge models (roughly for electron energies from 106 to 10-2 eV) available at CWI into one joint model and use it for estimates and predictions.

The KVI is an interfaculty institute for atomic and subatomic physics of the University of Groningen (RUG) and its staff members are employed partly by the university and partly by the NWO Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM). CWI is the national research institute of The Netherlands for applied mathematics and computer science, directly supported by NWO. It is located at Science Park Amsterdam.

Requirements

We are looking for two highly motivated students with a strong interest in theoretical, computational, and experimental physics.
The PhD candidates are required to have a master's degree in (applied) mathematics, atmosphere-ocean science, (theoretical) physics, or a related field. Ideally, the candidate has a good knowledge of stochastics, numerical methods, (geophysical) fluid dynamics, and statistics, as well as experience with scientific programming. Candidates are expected to have an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills.

Job description

The Radiation Science and Technology department at the Technical University of Delft (TUD) has a post-doctoral position available for research into 3D fluorescent imaging of the energy deposited by particle beams (e.g. protons, carbon ions) used in the radiotherapeutic treatment of cancer. The project is part of the Holland Particle Therapy Center (HollandPTC) R&D initiative in which the Erasmus Medical Centre (Rotterdam) (www.erasmusmc.nl) and the Leiden University Medical Centre (www.lumc.nl) have joined forces with the TUD (www.tudelft.nl). The mission of the consortium is to found the first proton therapy treatment centre in the Netherlands with top-of-the-line facilities in an academic, clinical environment ensuring at all times up-to-date, high-quality and safe treatment procedures.

The research will involve the development of techniques for providing 3D, tomographic images of the energy deposited by complex fields of high-energy radiation; e.g. spot-scanning proton pencil beams. The primary method will be based on a radio-fluorogenic gel (RFG) that yields a fixed, in space and time, fluorescence that is proportional to the local radiation dose. This must be combined with optical-emission computed tomography (OECT) methods with specifically designed apparatus and read-out algorithms. The project will have four interactive research tracks: 1) Optimisation of the RFG gel preparation procedures with an eye to routine application by non-scientific staff; 2) Quantitative characterisation and calibration of gel recipes, including measurements of the dose and dose rate deposition.

Requirements

Required qualifications are a PhD in physical chemistry or chemical physics-related subject. Experience with optical imaging techniques and radiation dosimetry is an advantage. Researchers are expected to be proactive in setting up and maintaining cooperation with several research groups within and beyond the HollandPTC consortium; therefore, an open attitude and good social and communication skills are a must.

The section Radiation and Isotopes for Health is one of the Department’s sections, and focuses on innovative production routes for radionuclides for use in medical diagnostics and radiation therapy, the use of radionuclides in studies of the behavior, distribution (e.g., targeting) and unanticipated effects of elements, radionuclides and their compounds and the development of radiation dosimeters.

The human face is an intriguing human trait that has an important role in almost every aspect of life including disease. Both biological and environmental factors contribute to normal and pathological variation of the human face. In this project, new bioinformatics methodology will be developed to automatically extract anatomic features from facial 3D data. Using modern statistical techniques, these data will be used to answer clinical and basic science questions. These questions include discrimination of certain conditions or the quantification of the influence of environmental and/or genetic factors on facial development. This project combines exciting aspects of computer vision, modern bioinformatics and statistical techniques in a close embedding with life sciences and clinical practice. Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated MSc student who has a strong background in mathematics, physics, (biomedical) engineering, or computer science. Programming experience in a procedural language is required (Preferably Matlab or C, C++, Java). Experience in bio-image analysis is an advantage. You are independent but at the same time you can work in a multidisciplinary team. You display a well-structured working style, you have good communication skills and you have an excellent command of the English language, both oral and in writing.

Conditions of employment

We offer you a temporary employment for a period of four years. Enrolment in the postgraduate Advanced School for Computing and Imaging-TU Delft is planned. The gross monthly salary amounts, based on education en previous work experience, a maximum of € 3.605,- (scale 9), based on a 36 hour working week. Job description

Hyperthermia is the application of elevated temperatures (41-45°C) to tumour tissue and is applied in combination with radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy to improve tumour control. Hyperthermia can be administered before, during or after radiotherapy/chemotherapy. The sensitizing effect of hyperthermia depends on both the realized tumor temperatures and the order of application. In the hyperthermia community there is no univocal policy about the sequence of radiotherapy and hyperthermia and different institutes apply different treatment schemes. This research project “Towards biological treatment planning in radiotherapy combined with hyperthermia to improve clinical outcome” aims to find the optimal order of application of radiotherapy and hyperthermia and thereby further improve the effectiveness of clinical hyperthermia. This will be investigated using sophisticated treatment planning computer models, in which the combined effect of hyperthermia and radiotherapy is modeled. For accurate modeling knowledge about biological tissue parameters is necessary, which will be obtained from cell line and animal experiments for combined treatments with radiotherapy and hyperthermia.

Requirements

For this project we have vacancies for two highly motivated PhD candidates. One of them will carry out the cell line and animal experiments and the other candidate will perform the computer modeling part of the project. Candidate 1 should have an MSc degree in (medical) biology or a related background. The candidate should have good command of English. Excellent communicative skills and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary research group are essential. The research will involve in vitro and animal experiments. Candidate 2 should have an MSc degree in physics or a related background. The candidate should have good command of English. Job description

Currently, breast screening is almost exclusively performed with mammography, even though it is known that some women are at a much higher risk to develop breast cancer or have dense breasts, in which sensitivity of mammography for detecting cancer is low (<60%). The aim of this project is to develop methods to personalise breast cancer screening. Firstly, reproducible quantitative markers characterizing breast density patterns in mammograms will be investigated and these will be related to the risk of developing breast cancer and the risk of missing a cancer with mammography. Secondly, techniques will be developed to increase feasibility of automated breast ultrasound imaging in women with dense breasts. These will include automated image analysis methods for computer aided decision support and advanced visualisation tools to combine ultrasound and mammography, or to compare screening exams over time. Research will be carried out in a large EU funded consortium in which ten partners cooperate.

Recent developments in oil production technologies emphasize the application of Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technologies. These processes rely on the injection of aqueous liquids into an oil reservoir to increase the sweep efficiency and stimulate oil production. Current practice for offshore applications is that seawater is used as source water. Often, seawater shall be desalinated to meet the injection specifications. 
As an alternative to seawater desalination, produced water can be treated for reinjection to avoid the intake of seawater or freshwater. The produced fluids consist of a combination of crude oil, formation water and the injected water. In order to allow the reinjection of produced water, pretreatment and purification of the water is necessary to meet the specifications required for reinjection.

This project investigates the produced water reinjection possibilities for IOR and EOR. The purpose of this project is to identify, develop and demonstrate methods to pretreat and purify the produced water for reinjection. Next to artificial feed waters, produced water from oil production locations will be used in laboratory experiments. Attention shall be paid to both pre-treatment requirements, membrane fouling and development of new membranes for produced water treatment. The effect of residual oils, production chemicals (scale and corrosion controlling chemicals) and biocides on membrane performance will be evaluated.


Background; MSc in chemical engineering, biotechnology, physics or related, with adequate experimental and theoretical skills. Interest in membrane processes and applied research with industrial relevance.
