The
human face is an intriguing human trait that has an important role in
almost every aspect of life including disease. Both biological and
environmental factors contribute to normal and pathological variation of
the human face. In this project, new bioinformatics methodology will be
developed to automatically extract anatomic features from facial 3D
data. Using modern statistical techniques, these data will be used to
answer clinical and basic science questions. These questions include
discrimination of certain conditions or the quantification of the
influence of environmental and/or genetic factors on facial development.
This project combines exciting aspects of computer vision, modern
bioinformatics and statistical techniques in a close embedding with life
sciences and clinical practice. This project will build upon existing
research experiences in facial phenotyping and its biological
determinants. A recent publication can be found at: www.plosgenetics.org/[...].
