The Van Vollenhoven Institute for Law, Governance and Development (VVI) is part of the Leiden Law School, Leiden University. In its research and teaching, VVI uses a socio-legal approach. Duties and responsibilities

• Doing research in VVI’s academic domain, including field research.
  
• Developing research, and co-supervising PhD-research.
  
• Teaching and developing courses in VVI’s academic domain, for  the bachelors programs of the Leiden Law School and Leiden University College.
  
• Acquisition and management of research and teaching projects.

Requirements

• Relevant Masters degree in Law, and/or Social Sciences, and/or Humanities.
  
• Ph.D. degree directly relevant to VVI’s academic domain and approach.
  
• In depth knowledge of state, law and society of at least one developing country in preferably the Middle East-North Africa region, or Sub-Saharan Africa.
  
• Relevant experience in independent research, research development, project management.
  
• Adequate publications record.
  
• Fluency in English; knowledge of Dutch and of the language of the country of study will be considered a strong advantage.
  
• Teaching experience; proven record as good, inspiring teacher.
  
• Team player with strong proven organizational skills, and relevant networks.
  

What we offer

The starting salary, depending on experience, varies from scale 11 to 12 with a minimum of € 3259,- per month gross and a maximum of € 5.070,- per month gross, based on full time employment. Part time employment might be a possibility. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break. Appointment will be according to the terms of the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten), for a period of one year initially (with a initial trial period of two months) with the possibility of extension (depending on performance). Duties and Responsibilities

• The lecturer will be expected to play an active role in the development and teaching of the programmes in Russian Studies (BA) and Russian and Eurasian Studies (MA).
  
• His / her main responsibility will be to teach Russian domestic and foreign policies, with a focus on the post-communist era.
  
• The candidate will also participate in the BA programme in International Studies.

Job description

SIM will be appointing three PhD researchers to engage in research on the so-called ‘receptor approach to human rights’. The receptor approach identifies the social institutions which are already in place in a given country to meet international human rights requirements, and it indicates how these institutions may be improved if they fall short of those requirements. By relying as much as possible on home-grown remedies, the receptor approach sets out to do justice to local culture and, at the same time, to enhance international human rights protection, especially in areas where such enhancement is most needed (see Tom Zwart, Using Local Culture to Further the Implementation of International Human Rights: The Receptor Approach, 34 (2012) Human Rights Quarterly, pp. 546-569). The project is being funded by the Dutch Foreign Office. The following topic will be researched:

The receptor approach and public international law
The PhD researcher covering this topic will look into the question if and how the receptor approach matches the requirements set by public international law regarding human rights. Thus, the receptor approach assumes that human rights may be implemented through non-legal means like culture and social institutions; that countries may retain their own – traditional – value system when they become signatories to human rights treaties; that the individual-versus-the-state paradigm is one but certainly not the only way to bring human rights to fruition; that the state can discharge its responsibility for implementing human rights obligations by leaving it mainly to non-state actors like the family and the community to realise human rights. The question is whether and how these elements of the receptor approach can be fitted into public international law regarding human rights.

Requirements

Applicants for this position are expected to have a master's degree, profound knowledge of public international law regarding human rights, exemplified by having completed an LLM in this area. Having working experience within an international institution governed by public international law and being familiar with TWAIL and other critical approaches to international are considered assets in this regard.

The researchers for all three topics are expected to write a PhD thesis in a timely fashion under the supervision of the director of the Receptor Project, Prof. Tom Zwart; to participate in and contribute to the activities of the School; to enroll in the School’s PhD training program; and to prepare papers for submission to peer-reviewed journals. Approximately 80% of the time will be devoted to researching and writing the thesis, while 20% will be spent on other activities, including taking courses.

Conditions of employment

We offer a PhD position with a gross monthly salary starting at € 2,062 in the first year to € 2,638 in the fourth year of employment. The successful candidates will be offered an initial contract as a PhD student for 18 months. Upon positive evaluation of the PhD students’ performance the contract will be extended by 2,5 years. We offer a pension scheme, a holiday allowance of 8% per year and flexible employment conditions. Conditions are based on the Collective Employment Agreement of the Dutch Universities.

The starting date will be September 1st, 2013. The PhD researchers will be based at the Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance of Utrecht University.

The mission of the division is to understand the signal transduction networks in cancer development, progression and treatment with the ultimate aim to develop better and safer anticancer therapies. A focus of the division is on understanding the mechanisms that underlie drug resistance in breast cancer using synthetic lethality screening approaches.

Postdoc “Novel Anticancer Targets for Killing Drug Resistant Breast Tumor Cells” (38 hours per week) Vacancynumber 13-132
Project Description
Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive subtype of breast cancer that has a poor disease prognosis. These tumors lack estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PgR) and epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and lack all receptors for which there are currently in breast cancer targeted agents available. Patients with TNBC are still treated with non-specific toxic chemotherapeutic drugs such as anthracycline and/or taxane-based chemotherapy. Newly developed targeted (combination) therapies are urgently needed for this heterogeneous subgroup of breast cancer patients. Genomics analysis of TNBC has identified various gene products that are associated with poor disease prognosis, yet their role in drug resistance is unclear. This project will involve a systematic RNA interference-based knock down screen of candidate modulators of drug resistance. We will use a small representative panel of human TNBC cell lines for synthetic lethality screens to identify novel drugable targets that can sensitize TNBC to common anticancer drugs. High content imaging-based approaches will be used. The role and mechanism of candidate genes will be studied in further detail in relation to DNA damage responses and/or mechanisms of cell death using molecular cell biology approaches. This project is a direct collaboration with the department of Medical Oncology at the Erasmus MC supporting the translation of the in vitro findings to the patient.

Requirements

We seek a talented and highly motivated candidate with proven experience in cell and molecular biology, cell signalling and cellular imaging. The candidate should have a PhD degree in the area of Oncology or Molecular Cell Biology and have demonstrated experience with screening and (breast) cancer. Experience or affinity with bioinformatics and cellular imaging is highly recommended.

The candidate will work within the Leiden Cell Observatory using state-of-the-art high content screening equipment. We are situated in the Gorlaeus Laboratories on the Science Park Leiden. We offer

The appointment is for 38 hours per week in temporary employment for two years, with the possibility of extension for four years thereafter. The rank of lecturer (Universitair Docent) corresponds roughly to that of assistant professor in North-American terms. The gross salary ranges from € 3.227,- to € 4.418,- per month (scale 11) for a full working week in accordance with the collective salary agreement of the Associations of Dutch universities (CAO) and depending on qualifications and experience. Leiden University also offers an annual holiday premium of 8% and an end-of-year premium of 8.3%.
Depending on qualifications, the appointee may start at the appropriate step in scale 10 until s/he fully meets the requirements for scale 11 as specified by the Faculty of Humanities, particularly with regard to teaching skills certification and the number of years of relevant work experience. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.

Job description

The aim of the PhD programme of the Graduate School is to turn out highly qualified researchers. For this purpose, the Graduate School offers PhD positions to excellent candidates who recently graduated. The PhD programme takes three years and leads to a PhD degree. These three years are primarily spent on the PhD thesis.
The PhD programme is embedded in the research institute ThRS with three excellent research programmes, namely:
1. Jewish, Christian and Islamic Origins
2. Comparative, and Historical Study of Religion

Examples of such equivalence include: an Mphil degree from a well-reputed university; having obtained a second regular Master degree from a well-reputed university; or having completed a research-oriented Honours programme with a minimum of 30 EC.

Conditions of employment

The University of Groningen offers a salary of minimal € 2,062 gross a month in the first year to maximal € 2,638 a month in the final year based on a full-time position. In addition there are a 8% holiday allowance and a 8,3% end of year bonus. The 0,9 fte appointment is temporary for a period of three years, under the condition of a positive assessment in the end of the first year to evaluate the feasibility of successful completion of the PhD thesis within the next two years.

Tijdelijke migranten doen het laaggeschoolde, zware werk, dat Nederlanders niet willen doen. Ze zijn essentieel voor de vergrijzende economie. De overheid zou dat moeten omarmen en faciliteren. Maar dat doet ze niet. Project Description

The project The Architecture of Postnational Rulemaking aims to provide new reflections and insights into the discussion on the legitimacy of post-national rulemaking starting from three distinct but in this project uniquely combined legal perspectives. The main objective is to relate perspectives from public international law, European public law and European private law on post-national rulemaking and to examine through a new lens questions of legitimacy and accountability that are raised by the growing importance of such rule-making.
At the core of the project lies a close multi-disciplinary dialogue between senior and junior researchers that crosses the normal boundaries of the three sub-disciplines of law involved. The successful candidate will benefit from the mentorship of distinguished professors in all three areas of law in the lively and supportive intellectual environment of the University of Amsterdam that has long enjoyed a strong, international reputation for critical innovation in legal research.
We expect the candidate to

• conduct postdoctoral research for the project, as part of the research group;
• contribute to the overall coordination and direction of the project;
• regularly present intermediate research results at international workshops and conferences, and publish them in proceedings and journals;
