The degree programme in European Languages and Cultures (ETC)
of the University of Groningen’s Faculty of Arts is seeking a university
lecturer (UD) in Spanish culture and literature in a European
comparative perspective, for the Culture and Literature profile of the
degree programme. The University Lecturer in Spanish should focus in
particular on modern cultural and literary studies but must also have
knowledge of earlier periods. We are looking for an enthusiastic and
versatile colleague who has the experience to contribute to the teaching
and research programme in the field of Spanish cultural and literary
studies. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the degree programme in
ETC, the UD must be able to place Spanish literature and culture into a
broader European historical, socio-academic and social context. He or
she must also be able to contribute to the Spanish language proficiency
programme and to collaboration with the Language and Society and the
Politics and Society profiles of the degree programme, as well as to
collaboration outside the degree programme.
The UD should be capable of attracting students to the degree programme in European Languages and Cultures as a result of inspiring teaching methods.
The research will form part of the ICOG research institute.
Specific duties:
- teaching in the field of European literary and cultural studies, in particular Spanish literary and cultural studies in a comparative perspective, within the bachelor’s degree programme in ETC and the master’s degree programme in Literature and Culture
- teaching Spanish language proficiency course units
- teaching in the minors Europe: Culture and Literature, Mexican and Latin American Studies, and Literary Culture in Premodern Europe
- conducting high-quality academic research in the aforementioned fields
- external grant acquisition
- supervising bachelor’s and master’s theses in the above-mentioned fields
- performing administrative and organizational duties.

Functie-eisen
In addition to a number of basic requirements set by the
University of Groningen, such as excellent social and communication
skills, presentation skills, coaching skills and a results oriented
attitude, we are looking for a candidate who has a PhD in the field of
Spanish literary and cultural studies, excellent (near-native)
proficiency in the Spanish language, and preferably also in English,
and,
in the area of teaching:
- has at least three years of teaching experience in the field of Spanish literary and cultural studies at various levels
- has experience in teaching Spanish language proficiency at all levels of the CEFR
- has gained the University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or is prepared to do so within a year
- is an excellent teacher, as demonstrated by positive teaching evaluations
- is demonstrably able to make concrete contributions to the development of course units, partly by actively linking teaching to research.
Iin the area of research:
- has authored at least two, preferably international, publications every year
- is able to set up his or her own research line and publish within it, dovetailing with the profile of the research institute
- has international experience and an international network
- is prepared to play an active role in supervising PhD research.
In the area of management and organization:
- has a good command of Dutch or is willing to learn the language within two years
- is able to make a constructive contribution to interdisciplinary collaboration and a friendly atmosphere within the department
- has demonstrable administrative and organization skills.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden
The University of Groningen is offering a salary based on
qualifications and experience of between € 3,324 (scale 11) and € 5,171
(scale 12 Dutch Universities) gross per month for a fulltime position.
The appointment is for two years, after which a Results and Development
interview will be held to examine whether the performance justifies
conversion of the temporary appointment into a permanent one.
