We are looking for an enthousiastic PhD student for the following research. The breaking up of the former USSR led to profound social and economic changes in those areas of Russia, White Russia, the Baltic Republics and Ukraine that are important to geese that migrate in winter to Western Europe. In the countryside much arable agriculture decreased, especially north of 55 degrees north but also in the steppe area in the south, livestock numbers decreased profoundly, river valleys get overgrown and hunting regimes change. The PhD student will study land use changes at the hand of sociological surveys, census outcomes and satellite imagery with the aim to understand changes in the migratory routes and population development of Barnacle geese, White fronted geese and Bean geese, and to make wellfounded predictions under different scenario developments. This has important implications for goose conservation.

Additional information about the vacancy can be obtained form Dr. Sip van Wieren,             0317-483434      ;sip.vanwieren@wur.nl.

We ask that the selected candidate should have a Master’s degree, or equivalent, in ecology with proven abilities to interpret remotely sensed imageries. Preferably she or he can read and speak Russian. A driving license is a necessity and so is the willingness and ability to travel independently in the named countries. Sound knowledge of spatial statistics is important as well as proven publication skills.

We offer a full time position (38 hours), initially for 18 months. If your suitability in this position is apparent, the period of employment will be extended to the remainder of your PhD study, with another 30 months. Gross salary starts at 2042 Euro per month during the first year, increasing to 2612 Euro per month during the fourth year. Commencing as soon as possible. The candidate will be based at the Resource Ecology Group in Wageningen.

In Europe the prevalence of heart failure (HF) is about 10-20 in 1000 persons and the prevalence is rising due to the ageing European population. In persons over 75 years of age about 10% is affected. Despite major improvements in the last decennium, prognosis and quality of life of CHF patients is limited. One of the reasons is that response to pharmacological treatment varies between individuals. To investigate markers of treatment-response, 5000 HF patients will be followed in the BiOSTAT-CHF project for mortality, hospitalization and their quality of life. Demographic data, established biomarkers and new genomic and proteomic biomarkers will be combined in prognostic models to predict treatment-response. The BiOSTAT-CHF is an EU-funded project with collaborators from France, Greece, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, and the UK (www.biostat-chf.eu).
Within this project there are two vacant positions for PhD students.
1. The primary aim of the first project is the development of prognostic models for the response to pharmacological treatment by CHF patients. The prognostic models concern mortality and morbidity of the patients and will be based on well known statistical methods using established risk factors of CHF as well as new biomarkers identified from genome-wide and proteome-wide biomarker identification. The prognostic models will be developed from the primary BiOSTAT-CHF sample and will be validated in a well characterized second sample.

2. The primary aim of the second project is the development of a systems biology approach to link the multidimensional clinical phenotypes of the CHF-patients and their outcome to genetic markers, gene transcription and translation levels in peripheral blood cells. Aim is to derive concise causal pathogenetic pathways that link the genetic and molecular data to the different CHF phenotypes and outcomes. For this project it is necessary to develop new statistical and bioinformatics methods.

Functie-eisen

We look for investigators with a master of science in medicine, biomedical/life sciences or (clinical) epidemiology (project 1) and investigators with a master of science in bioinformatics or mathematics/statistics (project 2). For both projects a very good command of the English language (spoken and in writing) is required because of frequent and intensive contacts with partners in the BiOSTAT-CHF project. Experience with clinical research and CHF is preferred but not a prerequisite. Candidates must be willing to travel to participating centers across Europe.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

- A full time PhD position with the possibility to participate in the exiting BiOSTAT-CHF project and to write PhD-theses on developing future tools for personalized medicine and understanding molecular biological underpinnings of chronic heart failure.
- Employment by the AMC Medical Research foundation for a period of 12 months, with possible extension of the contract to 48 months.
- A gross salary will be € 2.107,00 per month in the first year, with an increase to the maximum of € 2.700,00 per month in the fourth year. In addition the AMR BV has an End of Year Bonus of 8.3% and a holiday payment of 8% of the gross yearly salary.
- As a PhD candidate, you are entitled to follow courses provided by the AMC Graduate School.
Dienstverband: Temporary, 12 months, with possible extension of the contract to 48 months

Recent developments in oil production technologies emphasize the application of Improved Oil Recovery (IOR) and Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) technologies. These processes rely on the injection of aqueous liquids into an oil reservoir to increase the sweep efficiency and stimulate oil production. Current practice for offshore applications is that seawater is used as source water. Often, seawater shall be desalinated to meet the injection specifications.
As an alternative to seawater desalination, produced water can be treated for reinjection to avoid the intake of seawater or freshwater. The produced fluids consist of a combination of crude oil, formation water and the injected water. In order to allow the reinjection of produced water, pretreatment and purification of the water is necessary to meet the specifications required for reinjection.

This project investigates the produced water reinjection possibilities for IOR and EOR. The purpose of this project is to identify, develop and demonstrate methods to pretreat and purify the produced water for reinjection. Next to artificial feed waters, produced water from oil production locations will be used in laboratory experiments. Attention shall be paid to both pre-treatment requirements, membrane fouling and development of new membranes for produced water treatment. The effect of residual oils, production chemicals (scale and corrosion controlling chemicals) and biocides on membrane performance will be evaluated.

Background; MSc in chemical engineering, biotechnology, physics or related, with adequate experimental and theoretical skills. Interest in membrane processes and applied research with industrial relevance.
Hands-on approach.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

You will be working in a new, innovative, dynamic and future-directed research institute. You will be able to put your stamp on the development of new water technology. You will work in close collaboration with our industrial partners and also with top research groups at various universities.
Salary and working conditions are according to the collective labor agreement of the Cooperative Association of Dutch Universities (VSNU) for PhD students. PhD students are appointed by one of the cooperating universities but research is mainly conducted at Wetsus in Leeuwarden.

Employers have to notify government when they employ a non-EU citizen who does not need a workpermit
