Job description

We are seeking an early-stage researcher for a European Industrial Doctorates programme in advanced brain imaging using MRI. The project is a collaboration between the Donders Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging at Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands) and Siemens Medical Solutions based in Erlangen (Germany). Additional training will also be provided by the Rotterdam School of Management. The goal is to provide high-level modern training for physical scientists wishing to pursue a career in industry or academia. You will divide your time equally between Nijmegen and Erlangen, spending the first year of the project in Nijmegen. You will thus experience both an academic and a commercial environment. The project will use novel brain imaging techniques to make exhaustive examination possible within a fraction of the time needed only a few years ago. You will develop acquisition and analysis tools in Nijmegen and translate them into prototype applications in Erlangen. These will enable an analysis not only of brain anatomy, but also of brain connectivity. In the final stage of the project the tools developed will be utilised in a cohort of healthy volunteers to obtain normative values of brain anatomy and connectivity as functions of age and gender. The project offers an integrated training programme in MR-physics, neuroimaging and commercial and business skills, and will offer the researchers a broad range of career choices upon graduation.

Requirements

- a background in physical sciences, mathematics or engineering;
- an excellent academic trackrecord with a completed Master’s degree at the start of the project;
- a high degree of motivation and the ability to work independently;
- good communication skills, including both verbal and written English;
- the ability to work well in a team;
- an interest in the commercial application of advanced medical imaging techniques;
- prior knowledge of MR physics and the C++ programming language would be advantageous;

Job description

The Rijksmuseum’s model ship and scale-model collection is one of the most prominent maritime collections in the world. The heart of the collection consists of technical scale models constructed during the 19th century by order of the Ministry of the Navy. Such models were tools in the process of designing and constructing new naval vessels. These models were initially kept in the Marinemodellenkamer (Naval Models Room) in The Hague. This collection was soon expanded to include unique model ships from the 17th and 18th centuries, technical tools, weapons and captured standards. With the reopening of the Rijksmuseum, a significant part of this collection is once again on show to the general public, for the first time in almost a century. Over the past thirty years, intensive efforts have been made to fully treat and describe the approximately 1600 objects that make up this collection. In 2014, this work will culminate in the publication of a catalogue of the entire collection. The next few years will be devoted to research into the production process used to create these exceptional scale models. This project will focus mainly on the model makers themselves, and on the materials and methods that they used.
Job description
The essence of this position is to efficiently and effectively maintain model ships in optimal condition. The key task of the Junior Conservator ships model and scale models is the conservation of the model ship and scale-model collection. This will involve close collaboration with the Curator of Maritime Collections. The Junior Conservator works in the Furniture conservation department, and reports to the Head of Furniture Conservation. The Junior Conservator can also be assigned duties in the wider context of the work carried out in this department.
The main activities of this position are:

• Helping to monitor the physical condition of the model ship and scale-model collection in close consultation with, and subject to the instructions of, the Curator of Maritime Collections, such that imminent or actual deterioration is identified at a sufficiently early stage for corrective action to be taken;
• Performing conservation and restoration treatment, and the associated research, as directed and instructed, also in the context of any general work that needs to be carried out in the Furniture department;
• Contributing to the development of methods of research and conservation;
• Participating in development projects (including scientific projects) and conducting targeted research in the area of conservation;
• Taking part in project-based activities, including participation in consultative bodies and the implementation of substantive and administrative project-related work.

Requirements

• University degree in Conservation, with a specialization in the conservation of model ships, wood or furniture, or a comparable qualification from another country that is relevant to this specialism;
• Knowledge of, or affinity with, the function and construction of ships and model ships down through the ages;
• Knowledge of, and proficiency in, carrying out conservation treatments appropriate to the objects in the collection;
• Knowledge of, and proficiency in, preserving the various materials from which the objects are made;
• Proficiency in reporting the procedures followed and the results obtained;
• Knowledge of international developments in the field of conservation, as well as of new methods and concepts;
• Ambition to ultimately make a personal scientific contribution, by means of publications in this field;

Project: Breast cancer screening – from one-size-fits-all to a personalized risk-based approach
In virtually all population-based breast cancer screening programmes, the only risk factor – even though the strongest – used to define the target population is age. This ‘one-size-fits-all’ screening approach does not take advantage of the growing ability to predict individual variation in screening benefits and harms and to translate that information into better screening outcomes. In our project, we will model the impact of adapting breast cancer screening policy to a woman’s individual risk by collecting all relevant data on risk factors and obtaining a blood sample from the participants. In addition, we will make an inventory on communication, medico-legal and ethical considerations related to personalized risk-based screening and present a synthesis at an interdisciplinary expert meeting, along with results of the project, in order to discuss implications and recommendations for current vs. personalized risk-based screening policies. This project thus represents an essential first step towards the future, where more individualized approaches to screening are likely to become the new screening paradigm.
The PhD student on this project will collect information on risk factors and biomarkers in a screening cohort, develop a tailor-made risk prediction model and, subsequently, model the impact of adapting breast cancer screening policy to populations at varying levels of risk. In addition, the PhD student will be involved in the assessment of communication, medico-legal and ethical considerations related to personalized risk-based screening. The results will be reported in scientific publications (resulting in a PhD thesis) and presented at (inter)national conferences.

Research setting:
The PRISMA study (Personalized RISk-based Mammascreening) is part of the research group on Cancer Epidemiology at the Department for Health Evidence. The PRISMA study will be performed in collaboration with a consortium of (inter)national partners.

The Rijksmuseum is an institute where a great deal of scientific research is ongoing. In this context, a clear vision is expected from you regarding the development of the field of painting conservation and how you might envision accomplishing this goal. The Painting Conservation Studio is composed of painting conservators (6 permanent positions) and a frame conservator (1 permanent position), of which you are the Head. In addition, painting conservators are appointed regularly on contract for temporary projects (currently 10 positions). You have responsibility for all conservation projects and create, in close coordination with the curatorial Head of Fine Arts, the planning regarding the pictures to be restored, as well as determining the priorities of conserving the collection in storage in Lelystad. The location of the conservation studios of the Rijksmuseum is in the Atelier Building in Amsterdam, however minor conservation treatments can also be undertaken in the studio in the Lelystad storage facility. It is furthermore your task to help devise the ambitious conservation and research planning of the entire Conservation Department.
Beside your supervisory activities you are expected to:

• be known as a renowned and experienced (in theory and practice) painting conservator; 
• perform scientific research on the collection together with colleagues and/or scientists. The results of which will be documented in text and images and disseminated via the web, (contributions to) books or articles in scientific journals and at symposia;
• carefully document all undertaken treatments and to ensure and supervise the same by your colleagues in the studio;
• oversee the physical state of the collection so that (dangerous) deterioration is recognized on time and that proper measures are (can be) undertaken.

Requirements

• MA or MS in Painting Conservation at a recognized institution (in the Netherlands: the UvA or SRAL), preference may be given for a candidate with a PhD 
• experience performing complex conservation treatments and documentation of the results
• extensive knowledge of restoration methodology
• practical expertise in looking and understanding paintings and the ability to communicate
• an extensive network in the field of conservation and research
• a considerable number of publications from which the candidate’s enquiring attitude can clearly be discerned

The salary is commensurate with training and experience, minimally € 3.350,- and maximally € 4.666,- before taxes per month (scale 12), for a full-time week of 36 hours, excluding an 8% vacation bonus and an annual end-of-the-year bonus.  The Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University invites applications for a fulltime University Lectureship in modern Chinese history in its (East‑)Asian contexts, from late Qing to the present day. OBJECTIVE OF THE POST
The overall objective of the post is to provide medical and public health leadership in one portfolio of countries, to ensure MSF-OCA interventions effectively address the health needs of the populations we serve. This requires a close working relationship with the Operations Manager in order to develop, lead and ensure implementation of new strategies and interventions. The HA has a functional line directly to the medical coordinator for each country in the field. The Health Advisor works with support from a second Health Advisor in each portfolio.
KEY TASKS
The Health Advisor is responsible for leading the implementation, and assuring the quality of, health and medical programmes in his/her portfolio. This includes:

• Providing medical leadership to countries in his/her operational portfolio ( 3-5 countries), following the direction provided by the MSF-OCA Strategic Plan 2011-2014, annual plans and current MSF medical policies;
• Providing expert advice and support to the portfolio (Operations Manager, medical co-ordinators and country managers) in developing medical and health policies for his/her countries and translating them into effective operational strategies, including related advocacy and Access Campaign issues;
• Visiting each country/project to review programme direction, quality, and develop strategies, at least once a year;
• Coordinating the support from internal/external specialist advisors for specific countries;
• Reviewing/approving key HR appointments (Medco, Project Coordinators etc) for field projects, and (de)briefing of field staff;
• Directing and supporting medical co-ordinators and country managers in implementation of the country planning cycle: country policy, annual planning, and project proposals; 
• Stimulating awareness of emerging health problems in populations in countries and in ensuring an appropriate response;
• Ensuring that MSF-OCA field practice meets internationally agreed medical ethics, standards and laws (quality of medicines, treatment protocols, transport of biological and pharmaceutical materials), given contextual constraints;
• Monitoring the quality, outcomes and achievements of programmes.

In addition, the Health Advisor will contribute as requested by the Coordinator of Health Advisors to:

• The development and implementation of new health policies, operational strategies and protocols for MSF-OCA, including the development of pilot initiatives in the field;
• The development and implementation of operational research in MSF-OCA;
• Publication of relevant experience/research in medical and general media;
• Training and representation tasks as delegated by the Coordinator of Health Advisors.

Requirements

PROFILE AND QUALIFICATIONS
Required:

• Medical doctor, with broad knowledge and experience in the field of international Public Health and up to date clinical skills in tropical medicine;
• Relevant academic qualifications (minimum MD and Master of Public Health);
• Proven ability to provide strong leadership and vision in project/programme management;
• Proven strategic and analytical skills in medical programming;
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills (oral and written);
• Knowledge and experience in the humanitarian world; commitment and passion for the goals and work of MSF;

The overall purpose of Médecins sans Frontières (MSF) is to preserve life and alleviate suffering, while protecting human dignity and seeking to restore the ability of people to make their own decisions. MSF accomplishes this through the provision of medical aid and a personal commitment to act as witness to events surrounding populations in danger. This work is essentially performed in periods of crisis, when a situation is no longer held in balance and the very survival of a population may be threatened. Department

Public Health Department (PHD)

The Health Advisor reports for all operational/medical activities to the Coordinator of Health Advisors. The respective Operations Manager will lead the cell and ensure day to day functioning of the cell. This will require close collaboration with the Coordinator of Health Advisors to ensure operational and departmental commitments are balanced.
In the Operations Centre Amsterdam (OCA) MSF-Holland, Germany and UK share ownership and responsibility for Operations in the field. This has resulted in programme portfolios managed by Operations Managers (OM) run out of Amsterdam (3-4 portfolios) and Berlin (1 portfolio), plus a medical unit (Manson Unit) in London. Each portfolio of countries is supported by a team of advisors (the cell) - including the Health Advisor- led by the Operations Manager.
The Public Health Department (PHD) of the OCA supports the overall purpose of MSF, providing medical and public health leadership for the organisation. The department is responsible for providing strategic direction and integrated advice on medical and public health issues to the field and headquarters (operational managers). The PHD plays a key role in developing and maintaining the medical humanitarian identity and image of MSF-OCA, and in continuing to develop and improve intervention strategies so as to be relevant and effective. The Health Advisor plays a critical role in this, translating medical and public health strategies into field operations. The department is made up of a group of generalist Health Advisors (based in Amsterdam and Germany working directly with operations managers and the field), and medical and public health specialists (nutrition, water and sanitation, mental health, Access campaign etc) so as to provide expert support in a range of fields.
