'Geert Wilders' anti-Pole website crashes after Polish tv satire'

Wednesday 28 March 2012
Geert%20Wilders%20Polish%20television.png The website set up by the anti-immigration PVV to collect complaints about central and eastern European workers, crashed for a time on Tuesday evening after a Polish satirical television show called on viewers to leave a reaction, according to the AD.
The show featured presenter Szymon Majewski interviewing himself made up as Wilders in a blonde wig and posing against a backdrop of sheep and a windmill.
'I do not hate Poles who work in the Netherlands. I hate all Poles,' the fake Wilders says.
According to Radio Netherlands, another clip from the show features a Chinese man telling his audience that all foreigners, even Dutch, are welcome in Poland. 'Poles are friendly and helpful. All the ugly, nasty, greedy Poles are over in the Netherlands,' he says.
Access blocked
According to the AD, the PVV's website is no longer accessible to Polish internet users. PVV parliamentarian Ino van den Besselaar refused to say if steps had been taken to keep people with a Polish internet address from making a comment.
On Tuesday evening, MPs voted by a large margin to distance themselves from the website, which has been condemned by ambassadors, European commissioners and employers' leaders.
The motion to condemn the website was not supported by the PVV, the ruling right-wing Liberals (VVD) and the fundamentalist Christian SGP. Hero Brinkman, who left the PVV last week, voted in favour.
Prime minister Mark Rutte has repeatedly refused to distance himself from the motion, arguing it is a matter for the PVV alone. D66 leader Alexander Pechtold has asked the prime minister to explain how he intends to put the motion into practice.

The New Globalist Is Homesick

Kaye Blegvad
ACCORDING to a recent Gallup World Poll, 1.1 billion people, or one-quarter of the earth’s adults, want to move temporarily to another country in the hope of finding more profitable work. An additional 630 million people would like to move abroad permanently.
The global desire to leave home arises from poverty and necessity, but it also grows out of a conviction that such mobility is possible. People who embrace this cosmopolitan outlook assume that individuals can and should be at home anywhere in the world, that they need not be tied to any particular place. This outlook was once a strange and threatening product of the Enlightenment but is now accepted as central to a globalized economy.
It leads to opportunity and profits, but it also has high psychological costs. In nearly a decade’s research into the emotions and experiences of immigrants and migrants, I’ve discovered that many people who leave home in search of better prospects end up feeling displaced and depressed. Few speak openly of the substantial pain of leaving home.
This emotional style became common among mobile Americans in the 20th century, but represented a departure from the past. In the 19th century, Americans of all stripes — pioneers, prospectors, soldiers and the millions of immigrants who streamed into the nation — admitted that mobility was emotionally taxing. Medical journals explored the condition, often referring to it by its clinical name: nostalgia.
Stories of the devastating effects of homesickness were common. In 1887, an article in the Evening Bulletin of San Francisco had the headline, “Victim of Nostalgia: A Priest Dies Craving for a Sight of his Motherland” and reported that the Rev. J. M. McHale, a native of Ireland, had fallen ill with nostalgia after arriving in Brooklyn. Shortly before he died, he declared: “I am homesick. My dear country, I will never set a foot on your green shores again. Oh, my mother, how I long to see you.”
Today, explicit discussions of homesickness are rare, for the emotion is typically regarded as an embarrassing impediment to individual progress and prosperity. This silence makes mobility appear deceptively easy.
Technology also seduces us into thinking that migration is painless. Ads from Skype suggest that “free video calling makes it easy to be together, even when you’re not.” The comforting illusion of connection offered by technology makes moving seem less consequential, since one is always just a mouse click or a phone call away.
If they could truly vanquish homesickness and make us citizens of the world, Skype, Facebook, cellphones and e-mail would have cured a pain that has been around since “The Odyssey.”

Government opens hotline where Poles can complain

The social affairs ministry has launched a special complaints hotline where people from central and eastern Europe can register problems they've had with dubious employment agencies, minister Henk Kamp told MPs on Thursday.
The hotline was formally opened the same day that the European parliament is due to vote on a motion condemning the PVV's website to register complaints about central and eastern Europeans.
According to the Volkskrant, Kamp has denied any connection between the two initiatives. 'Our hotline was announced a while ago as part of a package of measures. It takes a while before a free phone line can be set up,' Kamp's spokesman said.
Competition
The government website and phone line is not only for people who feel they have been exploited by staffing agencies, but for companies who say they face unfair competition from cheap labour.
The initiative is part of a wider campaign involving councils, the tax office, employers and staffing agencies. The social affairs ministry has also recruited extra investigators.
Parliamentary researchers said earlier some 6,000 illegal employment agencies are recruiting workers for seasonal and temporary jobs in the Netherlands, mainly from central and eastern Europe. Many are put up in sub-standard accommodation and paid below the minimum wage.

Job description

We want to design new intervention strategies for lung cancer. These are urgently needed in view of the burden of this cancer. Therefore, we have developed mouse models that closely mimic the different lung cancers observed in man. In these models we have identified the cell-of-origin of the various lung tumor subtypes and we now want to determine how the ontogeny and the associated specific mutations influence the tumor characteristics such as their response to therapy. We approach this with advanced genetic methods that enable us to instantly generate new tumor models. We are particularly interested in therapy resistance mechanisms. Insight in these mechanisms should lead to improved treatment modalities for these tumors

As a PhD student you will participate in one of two research projects on how non-native listeners learn and process reduced pronunciation variants that are highly frequent in spontaneous speech (e.g. English mis instead of mist). One project is funded by a Starting Grant from the European Research Council, other by a VICI Grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. Both projects are directed by Professor Mirjam Ernestus. You will write at least three papers on the basis of this research for high-impact international journals.

General descriptions of the project:
The ERC and VICI projects investigate in detail how adult learners of a foreign language develop and use lexical representations for reduced pronunciation variants and how their listening skills can be improved. The projects aim at providing a first theory of how listeners learn to understand words in conversational speech in a foreign language.

PhD project E1 will investigate the nature of lexical representations that advanced late learners have developed for reduced variants in their foreign language, how they use these representations, and how this can be improved. It will study how native speakers of Dutch process vowel devoicing and categorical deletion of schwa in French.

PhD project E2 will investigate advanced late learners' sensitivities to subtle details of speech signals which act as cues to reduced sounds and how their comprehension of words can be improved with these subtle cues. It will study how native speakers of Spanish process gradient reduction of schwa and of word-final consonant clusters in English.

PhD project V1 will investigate how starting learners store phonetic details of reduced pronunciation variants in their lexical representations, how these representations develop over time, and the role of the native language therein. It will study how Dutch and Spanish young adults learn pronunciation variants with reduced vowels in English and French.

- you should have, or shortly expect to obtain an MSc degree in an area related to speech processing: such as psychology, cognitive neurosciences, phonetics, or linguistics;
- you should have an excellent written and spoken command of English and demonstrable knowledge of data analysis;
- you should be able to quickly learn new research methods and data analysis methods.

- you will be offered an initial contract for 18 months. Your performance will be evaluated after 18 months and if the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 24 months;
- you will be classified as a PhD student (promovendus) in the Dutch university job-ranking system (UFO);
- available as of 1 September 2012.

the gross starting salary is € 2,042 per month based on full-time employment
