Job description

We seek to attract a PhD student who will be working on the project described below. You are a highly motivated candidate, ideally with a background in either the life or earth sciences, particularly in palaeontology, systematics, and/or anatomy. You are eager to join our new institute and to study the Naturalis natural history collections.
PhD project: Vertebrate palaeontology and systematics of early chondrichthyans
Chondrichthyans feature prominently in debates on the origin of jawed vertebrates, but remarkably little is known about the acquisition of their distinctive anatomical traits. The early fossil record of chondrichthyans is comprised mainly of isolated scales, teeth, and spines, while articulated skeletons are comparatively rare. The current project examines the morphology and phylogenetic relationships of three articulated chondrichthyan and chondrichthyan-like fossil fishes from the Devonian and Carboniferous periods.
The candidate will address several key questions regarding the characters of early chondrichthyans, how chondrichthyans are identified in the fossil record, and the implications for the timing and morphological evolution of both chondrichthyans and early jawed vertebrate fossils.
This project will provide training in phylogenetic techniques, as well as comparative morphological expertise, microscopic and histologic techniques, as well as potential for learning computed tomography techniques and possible fieldwork. Applications from candidates who submit their own project ideas in a related area are encouraged and will be considered.

Requirements

The successful candidate should have a Master's or Honour's bachelorate (or equivalent) degree in biology, geology, or palaeontology with experience in systematics/phylogenetics and preferably knowledge of anatomical or organismal biology. Previous experience in palaeontology preferred but not necessary. Excellent command of the English language (written and verbal) is required. He/she has a scientific and critical attitude, excellent time management and organizational skills, and the ability to work independently. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated with a demonstrated capacity for multidisciplinary research.

Conditions of employment

A contract (36 hours per week) for a period of one year, to be extended with three years after succesful first year evaluation. A salary of circa € 33.000 per year. The candidate will also be affiliated with Leiden University. The appointment must lead to the completion of a PhD thesis.
Contract type: Temporary, one year, to be extended with three years after succesful first year evaluation

Job description

The Radiation Science and Technology department at the Technical University of Delft (TUD) has a post-doctoral position available for research into 3D fluorescent imaging of the energy deposited by particle beams (e.g. protons, carbon ions) used in the radiotherapeutic treatment of cancer. The project is part of the Holland Particle Therapy Center (HollandPTC) R&D initiative in which the Erasmus Medical Centre (Rotterdam) (www.erasmusmc.nl) and the Leiden University Medical Centre (www.lumc.nl) have joined forces with the TUD (www.tudelft.nl). The mission of the consortium is to found the first proton therapy treatment centre in the Netherlands with top-of-the-line facilities in an academic, clinical environment ensuring at all times up-to-date, high-quality and safe treatment procedures.

The research will involve the development of techniques for providing 3D, tomographic images of the energy deposited by complex fields of high-energy radiation; e.g. spot-scanning proton pencil beams. The primary method will be based on a radio-fluorogenic gel (RFG) that yields a fixed, in space and time, fluorescence that is proportional to the local radiation dose. This must be combined with optical-emission computed tomography (OECT) methods with specifically designed apparatus and read-out algorithms. The project will have four interactive research tracks: 1) Optimisation of the RFG gel preparation procedures with an eye to routine application by non-scientific staff; 2) Quantitative characterisation and calibration of gel recipes, including measurements of the dose and dose rate deposition.

Requirements

Required qualifications are a PhD in physical chemistry or chemical physics-related subject. Experience with optical imaging techniques and radiation dosimetry is an advantage. Researchers are expected to be proactive in setting up and maintaining cooperation with several research groups within and beyond the HollandPTC consortium; therefore, an open attitude and good social and communication skills are a must.

Conditions of employment

TU Delft offers an attractive benefits package, including a flexible work week, free high-speed Internet access from home (with a contract of two years or longer), and the option of assembling a customised compensation and benefits package. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Delft University of Technology strives to increase the number of women in higher academic positions; women are therefore especially encouraged to apply.

Job description

We have a vacancy for a post-doctoral fellow within a research program focusing on the identification of molecular factors that guide organ-specific metastases in colorectal cancer. While prognosis of patients with colorectal cancer has improved remarkably over the past decades, metastatic disease is the cause of death in a majority of colorectal cancer patients. Over the years many models have been developed to explain the metastatic process in detail, however, the molecular basis is still poorly understood. Recently, we have identified genetic aberrations in primary tumors that are involved in liver-specific metastases. Follow-up studies revealed specific high level amplifications involved in the development of metastatic disease. Unique patient series in combination with high quality molecular research will enable us to increase our knowledge within the next years.  The aim of the current project is to unravel the molecular processes and networks underlying organ-specific metastasis. The experimental work will be performed in collaboration with the Nijmegen Laboratory for Tumor Genetics.
The post-doctoral scientist:
  • designs and performs scientific  research
  • writes grant applications
  • performs molecular techniques (PCR, qPCR, ion torrent, sequencing)
  • performs situ hybridization techniques

Requirements

The post-doctoral scientist will primarily be recruited on the basis of scientific background and reputation and should be able to advance and complement the group’s present research program. We are looking for a creative and innovative scientist. Molecular and cellular biological expertise is required. Expertise with large scale genomic analyses and affinity with functional studies is preferred.

Conditions of employment

Temporary, after the first year, a positive evaluation of the postdoc can lead to an extension to a maximum of 3 years in total.

Vacancy: PhD researchers (5) positions) at Tilburg Graduate Law School 1. 0 fte

The Tilburg Graduate Law School (TGLS) of Tilburg Law School is committed to training top law students from around the globe whose academic work helps to solve today's societal problems, to address new legal challenges and to become excellent researchers. The mandate of the TGLS is to ensure and monitor the overall quality of the Research Master and PhD program. As such, the TGLS is responsible for the training and guidance of its Research Master students and of the PhD researchers. TGLS is now offering five positions.
The research mission of Tilburg Law School is to understand and improve the role of law in tackling societal problems now and in the future, particularly those connected with globalization and rapid economic, social, cultural and technological change. The research of Tilburg Law School is conducted in an organization that fosters diversity. In addition to jurists, international and national researchers from other disciplines, including economics, psychology, ethics and philosophy participate in the various research programs. Although they are uncommon in the field of legal research, we are convinced that internationalization and interdisciplinarity have become permanent characteristics of the study of law, because they
- hold the answers that legal science discipline can give to the questions raised by the changing context in which we live. European integration, the global economy, the multicultural society and the ever-increasing role of non-state actors are putting pressure on the dominant role of the nation-state and national law.
- are crucial factors in the process of the scientification of the law - a process in which Tilburg plays a pioneering role. Although law is much less of a universally integrated academic discipline than, for instance, economics, significant strides have been taken over the years, first towards internationalization, and now towards interdisciplinarity.
- afford new opportunities to make our academic activities relevant in the public debate.

Profile
You are an outstanding student, who has an excellent command of English and who has completed a Master in Law or a Master in relating multidisciplinary fields like Law and Economics, Law and Technology, Law and Labour Law, Politics and Public Administration or Victimology. Research Master's program students are especially encouraged to apply.
