Job description

  • Developing, conducting, and supervising high quality academic research on the international and transnational relations of the Middle East;
  • Teaching general and specialist courses in Political Science, more in particular International Relations at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels, and involvement in post-graduate supervision;
  • (Participation in) the acquisition of external research funding;
  • Contributing to the research programme of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research and to the development of the field through scholarly publications and participation in national and international research networks and educational initiatives.

Requirements

  • A completed doctoral thesis in Political Science or other relevant field in the social sciences;
  • An ongoing programme of research and publications, focused on internationally ranked, ‘peer reviewed’ journals and/or books published by internationally recognized academic presses;
  • Broad general knowledge in International Relations;
  • Ability to help lead to student exchange programmes, such as the University's Zeytun programme;
  • Mastery of appropriate social science research methods (qualitative and/or quantitative);
  • Ability to provide excellent and inspiring teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in English as well as (eventually) Dutch;
  • Strong passive and adequate active knowledge of Dutch, or the ability and willingness to acquire such within a period of three years;
  • The basic qualification at Dutch universities in higher education (Basiskwalificatie Onderwijs; BKO) certificate, or a willingness to acquire such.

Conditions of employment

Depending on experience, pay will be based on assistant professor scale 1 or 2 (i.e. a gross monthly salary ranging from a minimum of €3195 to a maximum of € 4970 for full-time work, based on the January 2009 salary scale). Holiday pay is 8% of the gross annual salary, while the year-end bonus is 8.3% of the gross annual salary. According to our employment policies, you will be offered a temporary contract for three years, with conditions for tenured position thereafter agreed upon appointment.
Under exceptional circumstances the Department will also consider appointment at the Associate Professor level.

The Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences (FMG) is the largest educational and research institution in the social sciences in the Netherlands. The Faculty serves around 9,000 students in numerous Bachelor's and Master's programs in Political Science, Sociology, Anthropology, Communication Science, Psychology, Social Geography, Planning and International Development Studies, and Educational Sciences. The academic staff is employed in education as well as research. There are over 1,200 employees at the Faculty, which resides in a number of buildings in the centre of Amsterdam.

On behalf of TNO Space you will be responsible for developing the space market. By identifying future space projects and being involved in these projects at a commercial level, you will proactively contribute to the TNO Space strategy. You identify current and future customer needs and market opportunities.

The position encompasses two main task areas: optical mechanical instruments for science missions (for instance for ESA) and earth-based astronomy (for ESO and other organisations).
You are part of the Business Development Team Space (6 FTEs) which focuses on four themes - Earth Observation Instrumentation, Space Science Instrumentation, Mission Critical Components and Space Data Utilisation. You work in a technical/commercial matrix organisation and report to the Commercial Manager and the Business Line Manager Space.

More specifically, you will be responsible for:
• Management of sales and tender processes (from initiation, contract negotiations and contract closing to after sales;
• Gaining position within various consortia / prime contractors;
• Proactive role as sparring partner with a view to achieving business objectives;
• Identifying the needs of the market and establishing networks within (new) markets;
• Identifying future space projects;
• Implementation of the TNO strategy in the space market;
• TNO positioning and recognition within the space industry;
• Development of and linking up with relevant Business Cases;
• Consolidation of, initiating and developing contacts with (new) customers and stakeholders in the areas of upstream and downstream space.

Profile 

Preferably, you have a background and network in the space market. You have a proven understanding of complex business development processes and have experience as a sales manager, business developer or project manager, with a passion for technology. You are comfortable in both a technical/scientific and commercial environment.

In addition, you have:
• Knowledge of technical and consultative sales processes;
• The ability to maintain contacts and advise customers at various levels, preferably on strategic space industry issues;
• Knowledge of (future) space programmes;
• A proven ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment;
• An academic technical background (such as astronomy, physics, nuclear physics, particle physics electronics, applied physics);
• A good command of the English language (knowledge of Dutch is preferred, but not required).
