Job description

  • As part of multi-disciplinary project teams, you will perform research in the area of systems & process engineering specifically in the area of thermal processing for wet and dry food products . Including modeling of heat- and mass transfer, principles of control theory, microbial inactivation and sustainability evaluation;
  • You will be responsible for “on time in full” delivery of agreed project targets, which can include supervision of colleagues and trainees;
  • You will keep a specific focus on the identification and development of proprietary technology for Unilever, both in the context of the project work and in the activities mentioned below;
  • You will monitor scientific/technological developments in the area of thermal & preservation processing systems in order to assess relevance and impact for the business;
  • You will provide up-to-date expertise on one or more selected topics within the field of process engineering and related modeling techniques;
  • You will carry out literature-, cross-category- and/or other reviews, integrating information into frameworks, and summarizing these into memo’s, reports and/or other presentations for different audiences (e.g. scientists, product developers, marketing) in English;
  • You will represent the group at scientific congresses and conferences.

Requirements

  • Masters in engineering, applied physics or food technology (PhD or PDEng is also possible);
  • A minimum of two years relevant work experience is required;
  • Be fully familiar with model based design and optimisation techniques;
  • Have an will an open and challenging mind seeking to develop and implement ‘novel’ processing solutions (or improvements);
  • Think about realistic innovations into factories and regional business groups;
  • Proven track record and active network in the area of R&D in systems & food processing for thermal (preservation) technology;
  • Internationally oriented;
  • Proven experience in modeling techniques for thermal processing, (Matlab & Ansys);
  • Willing to travel across Europe on a frequent basis;
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.

Structured Materials and Process Science
Within the expertise area of Structured Materials and Process Science, the Systems and Process Engineering team aims to deliver product driven process (re-) designs to support the industrialisation of Unilever food products and processes. This will be achieved by exploiting fundamental understanding of the various process characteristics and application of modern Modelling, Control & Optimisation techniques to obtain the ‘best’ processes. This is linked to the design and first implementation of novel equipment for manufacturing, taking into account the hygiene aspects which are specifically strict for foods.

You will be working in the “Systems & Process Engineering” team. This expertise group aims to be a centre of excellence on model based process engineering. The process engineers participate both in multidisciplinary project teams as well as consultant. They propose and carry out applied research necessary for project delivery.
