Job description

Due to a recent agreement between the University of Amsterdam (Faculty of Humanities)
and the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science (as part of the
Danish Lecturer Scheme ‘Lektoratsordningen’) a position for a lecturer
in Danish at UvA, as part of the Scandinavian Program has been
established. This position is advertised for the first time and the
selected candidate will be the first to hold this post.

Together
with other newly appointed lecturers and professors you will participate
in a comprehensive introductory program. You will be supervised closely
during the first year of your appointment. Additional didactical
training can also be part of the appointment. The introductory program
includes earning the 'basic training qualification'.

The starting date is preferably 1 February 2015.

The
position of lecturer in Danish includes teaching in Danish language,
literature and culture, at the university level. The language training
is expected to be about 6 (0,27 fte) hours a week. In addition to the
language courses, teaching-related tasks, such as dealing with
assignments, examinations, administrative tasks and taking part in staff
meetings, are part of the position.

The position also includes
research in Danish language, literature and/or culture within the
department's research fields. The lecturer's research obligations are
approximately one day a week (0,23 fte). Supervision and research
training will be made available at the Scandinavian Programme and
relevant research groups at the Faculty of Humanities at the University
of Amsterdam. The research is expected to culminate in acquiring a PhD
degree from the UvA. Depending on the project's affiliation to a
relevant Danish research milieu, the possibility of a joined degree with
a Danish University might also be an option.

Candidates must also
be prepared to advise exchange students about studying in Denmark and
to engage in cultural exchange, including organising literary and film
events, visits of scholars, writers etc. and taking care of contacts
with the embassy and other relevant institutions, as well as being part
of the organization of - and participate in - conferences, venues, etc.

Requirements

  • Candidates
    must be fluent in Danish at a native speaker level, and hold a Master's
    degree (cand.mag) in Danish or another relevant discipline;
  • candidates must have teaching experience, preferably in teaching Danish as a foreign language;
  • candidates
    must proof research ambition and produce a first draft of a PhD
    proposal. If a candidate already has started working on a PhD
    chapters/drafts should be included in the application;
  • you are
    expected to be able to establish good collegial working relations and to
    be thoroughly acquainted with Danish society, literature, film and
    culture. Additionally, you must be prepared to engage in various forms
    of cultural exchange;
  • finally, it is assumed that you have good
    language skills in English, both spoken and written and that you will
    learn the Dutch language in accordance with faculty regulation during
    the first two years of your assignment (Dutch language courses are
    provided by the department).

Conditions of employment

The
appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of three years.
The chosen candidate will be appointed for 0,5 fte (19 hours per week)
initially for a period of one year. Contingent on satisfactory
performance it will be extended by a maximum of two additional years.

The
gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the university
regulations for academic personnel, and will range from €2,427 up to a
maximum of €3,831 (scale 10) based on a full-time appointment depending
on qualifications, expertise and on the number of years of professional
experience.

The University of Amsterdam will cover the travel
expenses of the lecturer and his/her family, and provide for the
lecturer's relocation at the beginning and the end of his/her term after
3 years, i.e. of 90 % of the deemed reasonable moving expenses of
furniture and belongings after approved offers.

The Faculty of Humanities offers assistance in finding housing, but cannot guarantee housing.

Furthermore,
the Ministry will reimburse the lecturer's annual journey home, to be
able to attend the summer course for Danish lecturers abroad.

The
appointment depends on the existence of a valid agreement between the
University of Amsterdam and the Danish Agency for Higher Education of
the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science.
