VACANCY: Head of Corporate Communications (heritage)

Europeana is a catalyst for change in the world of cultural heritage, creating new ways for people to engage with their cultural history. Through Europeana, everyone can explore over 30 million digitised books, paintings, films and audio files from the great collections of Europe. We're opening up cultural heritage for use in new apps and services that will contribute to Europe's digital economy.
You will work to build recognition of Europeana's social and economic value at a European level. Your audiences will be policymakers and politicians in the EU and national ministries. You'll use PR to engage the media and the wider public in our work. You will need to develop strong networks among the professional heritage, learning and creative sectors.
The Head of Corporate Communications is based in our head office in the National Library of Netherlands in The Hague, and is responsible for two team members based in the UK. The post-holder reports to the Executive Director and works closely with the Business Development Director, the marketing team and other colleagues to develop and implement strategic, consistent communications that reinforce the Europeana brand to all target audiences.

Key responsibilities include:
  • All Europeana Corporate Communications & PR strategy fromcreation to planning and execution
  • Demonstrating and communicating Europeana’s value to EU policymakers, funding agencies and strategic bodies
  • Creating corporate documents
  • Implementing Europeana’s brand positioning
  • Developing communications channels to new target audiences in the creative industries and research sectors
  • Overall editorial responsibility for corporate news, policy and corporate documents and Europeana’s Professional website
  • Work closely with the Executive team, Marketing Manager and Chief Network Officer to ensure aligned communications, and manage a small comms team and large Europeana Communicators Group
  • Part of the Europeana keynote speech team and the spokesperson for Europeana for media and journalists
  • Overseeing PR campaigns - Europeana employs and manages PR companies across Europe and works with partners as well as with input from Ministries and memory institutions
  • Leading communications work packages for two major EU projects, delivering reports and outputs to schedule
You must have:
  • Extensive experience of PR and communications work at a strategic level
  • Perfect English with the ability to write and present fluently
  • First-rate organising skills with an eye for detail
  • High level of understanding of social media and digital technologies
  • Wide knowledge of cultural heritage
  • A willingness to travel, sometimes at only a few days’ notice, to work with our partners around Europe
  • A positive disposition, able to work cheerfully to demanding deadlines in a busy environment
  • Proven networking skills, with the ability to work with a range of teams from different backgrounds and perspectives
  • Leadership and motivational skills, with a team player’s outlook combined with individual initiative and imagination
Good to have:
  • Another European language
  • Postgraduate professional qualification
Location & benefits
Europeana’s head office is in the National Library of Netherlands in The Hague. However, the British Library also houses members of Europeana’s communications team. You can choose to be based in either location, although the London location will require you to travel frequently to The Hague and spend large amounts of time working with the teams based there. You will also need to travel to other European countries.
If based in the British Library: you will have a salary in line within the scale £31,911 -49,989 (annual gross) depending on your experience and skills.
If based in the National Library of Netherlands: you will have a monthly gross salary between EURO 3,228 - 5,048 (scale 11-12), in line with the Collective Labour Agreement for Research Institutes, depending on your experience and skills.
Furthermore you will have: 42 days holiday per year, a holiday allowance (around 8%) and an annual bonus (around 8%).
Its also important to know that the National Library of the Netherlands in The Hague is very close to Central Station.
