VACANCY: Senior Patent Attorney at Shell - The Hague (Netherlands)

We’re currently looking to recruit a Senior Patent Attorney to join us in the Netherlands. The successful candidate will provide optimal patent protection in a defined area of Shell’s businesses, defend patents against attacks by third parties and, if necessary, assist in the enforcement of patents. Shell has around 29,000 patents in over 110 countries you’ll be responsible for managing part of this holding and the IP risks relating to the business area you’re focused on.

Responsibilities:


  • Providing cost effective and efficient legal/intellectual property services tailored to the needs and priorities of one or more global Shell businesses; 
  • Providing objective, informed and legally competent advice and direction to the management of Shell businesses regarding intellectual property rights, opportunities, risks and liabilities;
  • Securing and maintaining optimal protection worldwide for the Shell Group’s intellectual property, including identifying inventions, preparing and prosecuting patent applications and defending Shell Group’s patents against attacks by third parties;
  • Maintaining an understanding of the Shell businesses the individual supports, including detailed knowledge of R&D/Technology activities and plans, business operations and plans, business and technology and IP strategies, the businesses’ portfolios of IP rights and assets, the businesses’ obligations and liabilities under its IP-related third party agreements, and the technology and IP positions and strategies of competitors and other third parties active in business and/or technology areas of interest to Shell; 
  • Maintaining expertise in laws, regulations and legal processes generally or specifically applicable to the responsibilities of this Senior Patent Attorney; demonstrating ability to work within a field characterized by much uncertainty in the law; maintaining a working knowledge of laws, regulations and processes throughout the world;
  • Following and mastering relevant technology developments, both developments originating within Shell and developments by third parties;
  • Supporting the development of budgets and exercising appropriate control over internal and external costs; 
  • Acting and advising in compliance with the complex structure of Shell Group governance in general and in particular Shell Intra-Group Agreements, which focus strongly on controls over intellectual property rights.


Requirements:


We are looking for a qualified Patent Attorney with a technical degree in mechanical engineering or physics or a related discipline. Furthermore we are looking for somebody with a European and a national qualification that required formal examination on all aspects of European and relevant national patent laws and patent practice with more than 10 years of experience (post European Patent Office (“EPO”) qualification) in patent practice, including experience in oppositions and other hearings before the EPO.
