Job description

Research in Leiden is concentrated in five research programmes, in which researchers from different (legal) disciplines work together. The five research programmes are Securing the rule of law in a world of multilevel jurisdiction, Criminal Justice, Coherent Private Law, Limits of Tax Jurisdiction and Reform of Social Regulation. Research fellows and doctoral candidates from the Leiden Law School carry out cross-border research in these programmes. The research within these programmes is characterized by exploring the limits of the law. The five research programmes are united by the coordinating profile area ‘Interaction between Legal Systems’, which is meant to facilitate and stimulate interaction between legal researchers working in this field.
The Meijers institute, Research Institute and Graduate School offers 2 PhD-positions.
Tasks:
Meijers PhD-position 1 is allocated to an outstanding participant of the Talent Programme of the Leiden Law School. Meijers PhD-position 2 will be granted to a talented (post-) master student. Candidates are offered the opportunity to write their own research proposal. Applicants can be Dutch or international students. Both grants subsidize a four-year term.

Requirements

  • An excellent academic track record and a Master's degree in law and/or social sciences
  • The applicant completed the Talent Programme with excellent results (Meijers Phd-position 1) or
    The applicant has an interest in and preferably qualifications for scientific research, e.g. a training in a research master or completed the Talent Programme with excellent results (Meijers Phd-position 2)
  • An interesting and detailed research proposal which fits in one of the research programmes of the Leiden Law School, including a dissertation supervisor of the Leiden Law School.
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills in English; good command of a second foreign language is desirable;
  • Demonstrated research experience, including qualitative and/or quantitative research
  • Capability of finishing the proposed research within the period assigned to the project
  • Ability to work in a team and willingness to support the activities of the Leiden Law School, e.g. the organization of research meetings, symposia etcetera.

Conditions of employment

The two PhD candidates will be initially appointed for one year. At satisfactory performance during this period, the appointment will be renewed for the rest of the period of three or four years. The appointment is for 1.0 full-time equivalent. Remuneration will be € 2,042 gross per calendar month in the first year, increasing to a maximum of €2,612 gross per calendar month in the fourth year in accordance with current pay scales as indicated in the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO Nederlandse Universiteiten). You will also receive a end-of-year bonus of 8.3% of your yearly income.
