Job description

The research group "Database Architectures" in the cluster "Information Systems" has vacancies for three talented PhD students in Big Data Analytics.
The positions are in the broad area of big data analytics to enable robust and scalable big data analytics. Research topics are in novel query processing, (adaptive) indexing and optimization techniques, and bridging the gap between application programming and big data storage.
One of these vacancies is in the context of a collaboration project with Actian Vectorwise, while the other two are related to the Dutch national research program COMMIT.
An internship at one of the partnering database research labs world-wide is considered part of the PhD track.

Requirements

Candidates are required to have a master degree in computer science (or a five year diploma). Specialization is needed in databases, distributed systems, software engineering mathematics, or related fields. Preferable qualifications for candidates include proven research talent, system programming skills (C/C++), practical experience with using and implementing database systems, and software development in a team.
Candidates are expected to have an excellent command of English, and good academic writing and presentation skills.

Conditions of employment

The terms of employment are in accordance with the Dutch Collective Labor Agreement for Research Institutes ("CAO-onderzoeksinstellingen"). Moreover CWI offers attractive working conditions, including flexible scheduling and help with housing for expat employees. CWI also offers excellent and flexible terms of employment, including an employee pension fund.
The gross monthly salary, for an employee on a full time basis, is €2,057 during the first year and increases to €2,636 over the four year period.
Contract type: Temporary, 4 years.

Organisation

Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica (CWI)
Founded in 1946, CWI is the national research center for mathematics and computer science in the Netherlands. More than 170 full professors have come from CWI, of whom 120 still are active. CWI's strength is the discovery and development of new ideas, and the transfer of knowledge to academia and to Dutch and European industry. This results in importance for our economy, from payment systems and cryptography to telecommunication and the stock market, from public transport and internet to water management and meteorology.
An international network
With its 55 permanent research staff, 40 postdocs and 65 PhD students, CWI lies at the heart of European research in mathematics and computer science. Researchers at CWI are able to fully concentrate their efforts on their scientific work, and to build an international network of peers. More than half of the permanent research staff maintains close contact with universities as part-time professors. The personal and institutional research networks strengthen CWI's positions and serve as a magnet for attracting talent. The CWI researchers come from more than 25 countries world-wide.

Department

Database Architectures
The Database Architectures group at CWI is one of the world-wide leading groups in system-oriented database research. Among other honours, it received the 10-year best paper award at VLDB 2009 for their pioneering research on hardware-aware database technology and the column-store model, both the 2011 ACM SIGMOD Jim Gray Dissertation award and 2011 ERCIM Cor Baayen award for the database cracking work, as well as the VLDB 2011 Challenges & Visions Track best paper award for their visionary work on innovative database architectures to support big data analytics and data-intensive scientific discovery.
The group has a unique methodology that combines fundamental database research with active participation of all group members in database engineering, centred around the open-source analytical database system MonetDB.
