Vacancy Netherlands eScience Center (NLeSC) - eScience Research Engineers

The position:
eScience research engineers are scientists able to work at the interface of a scientific discipline and advanced digital technologies. eScience research engineers are (mostly) scientists that hold a PhD and that have a history of developing and applying scientific digital technologies within research domains. They are also interested in sharing their knowledge and experience outside their domains.
As an eScience research engineer you will operate in a scientific environment. You will be responsible for the translation of scientific questions into solutions that effectively apply advanced digital technologies and for promoting the use of eScience technologies. You will develop methodologies, applications and high quality software and ensure that these can be used easily by scientists within a coordinated eScience infrastructure. You will work closely with other scientists both within NLeSC and its partner organisations. eScience research engineers work as a close team, creatively combining and sharing knowledge between projects. It is likely that you will work part time at NLeSC and part time at a university or research institute participating in collaborative projects.
NLeSC is recruiting eScience research engineers at various levels able to work closely with scientists from various disciplines. The tasks include acting as an interface between researchers and NLeSC, contributing to software development for scientific research. Scientific contributions (e.g., papers, project proposals) are also expected. Therefore we are looking for eScience research engineers who have a broad interest, and who can work with several different scientific disciplines.

Functie-eisen

We require:
  • Academic level (obtained through education, training and/or experience), possibly with a PhD degree;
  • Experience working in an academic or related environment;
  • Experience with scientific research and the use of scientific digital technologies;
  • Demonstrable interest and experience in one or more of the following areas: high performance computing, data management, data analytics, statistics, and/or applied mathematics;
  • Good software development skills, knowledge of software architecture;
  • Experience with Java, JavaScript, C++, and/or Python.
  • Excellent command of English (both verbal and written);
Competences:
  • A critical and constructive attitude to contribute actively to eScience infrastructure improvements;
  • Motivated, flexible (no 9-to-5 mentality), creative, initiative taking, independent but also a real team player;
  • Strong communication skills with an external orientation;
  • Innovative: translate scientific questions into unconventional (technological) solutions and new ideas and also able to realize them. 

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

Working conditions:
We offer a position at NLeSC, initially for a fixed period of 2 years, within the collective agreement for Research Institutes. Classification is based on education and experience with salary depending on qualifications and experience, starting from € 2.579,- up to € 4.772, - gross per month, with a 38-hour working week (salary scale 10-11). We offer holiday pay amounts to 8% of gross salary actually received and a full 13th month of salary as an end-of-year payment.

The location is Amsterdam (Science Park), but site work at NLeSC collaborating organizations is an important part of your work and may involve travelling.
