Job description

The Faculty of Law seeks to fill a position for a postdoctoral researcher in the field of postnational rulemaking. The successful candidate will work within the overarching project ‘The Architecture of Postnational Rulemaking: Views from Public International Law, European Public Law, and European Private Law',  jointly executed by three Centres of Exellence at the Faculty, i.e. the Amsterdam Centre for European Law and Governance ACELG, the Amsterdam Center for International Law ACIL and the Centre for the Study of European Contract Law CSECL.

Project Description

The project The Architecture of Postnational Rulemaking aims to provide new reflections and insights into the discussion on the legitimacy of post-national rulemaking starting from three distinct but in this project uniquely combined legal perspectives. The main objective is to relate perspectives from public international law, European public law and European private law on post-national rulemaking and to examine through a new lens questions of legitimacy and accountability that are raised by the growing importance of such rule-making.
At the core of the project lies a close multi-disciplinary dialogue between senior and junior researchers that crosses the normal boundaries of the three sub-disciplines of law involved. The successful candidate will benefit from the mentorship of distinguished professors in all three areas of law in the lively and supportive intellectual environment of the University of Amsterdam that has long enjoyed a strong, international reputation for critical innovation in legal research.
We expect the candidate to
  • conduct postdoctoral research for the project, as part of the research group;
  • contribute to the overall coordination and direction of the project;
  • regularly present intermediate research results at international workshops and conferences, and publish them in proceedings and journals;
  • participate in the organization of research activities and events, such as conferences, workshops and joint publications;Possibly supervise PhD candidates within the project;
The candidate may also lecture on subjects in the Faculty’s curriculum.

Requirements

  • Completed dissertation in European private law, European public law and public international law. Private lawyers in particular are encouraged to apply;
  • strong affinity with the core theme of the project and interest in cross-disciplinary research;
  • creative and prolific writer;
  • excellent command of English.

Conditions of employment

The position is full-time, fixed term for 2 years starting on 1 September 2013 or as soon as possible thereafter, with the possibility of an extension for an additional year. The salary will be in salary scale 10 or 11 in accordance with the CAO for Dutch universities.
