Job description
The
heterosexual double standard (the divergent set of rules regarding
sexual conduct for women versus men) is put into practice unevenly among
young people today. Stereotypically gendered (hetero)sexuality is
typically a ‘now you see it now you don’t phenomenon’. This project
explores enactment of the double standard by adolescents and young
adults. It specifically investigates the conditions under which
(hetero)sexual or sexually tainted (hetero)social interaction is more or
less likely to be typically (i.e. traditionally) gendered. Insight into
the conditions shaping gendered sexual behaviour is important
considering its complex relation to gender equity and (sexual and
mental) health. This project aims to add to this body of knowledge by
particularly focussing on equity and health relevant behaviours such as
sexual autonomy, assertiveness and aggression. The study focuses on the
microdynamics of these behaviours by looking at micro-level sociosexual
interactional processes such as norm sending, social tuning and
expectancy confirmation. Main research questions address the influence
of proximal situational factors (notably the salience of gender and
sexuality stereotypes) and partner related factors (notably partner’s
gender typedness) on outcomes related to sexual agency (activity,
autonomy, assertiveness) and sexual aggression in subjects. Subject
related variables will be studied as moderators of context and partner
effects. Methods are (secondary) analyses of cross-sectional survey
data, a field-experimental vignette study and laboratory experiments.
The PhD student will be responsible for the (survey and laboratory) study set up and data gathering, analysis and report. He/she will write at least 5 papers on the data, resulting in a doctoral dissertation.
