The Amsterdam School of Heritage, Memory, and Material Culture,
one of the six research schools, currently has two vacant PhD positions
as part of the NWO-funded open competition project Diaspora and
identity: an integrated archaeological and historical investigation into
material life, ethnicity, and diet in the district of Vlooienburg,
Amsterdam (AD 1600-1800). The positions will reinforce global historical
archaeology within the Amsterdam Centre for Ancient Studies and
Archaeology (ACASA). The PhDs will be supervised by Prof. James Symonds
and Prof. Jerzy Gawronski. Applications are now invited from excellent
candidates who wish to conduct research on an outstanding assemblage of
material from a major excavation the heart of ‘Golden Age’ Amsterdam.
One project focuses on household goods and personal items, the other on
the use and disposal of animal products and faunal remains.

Tasks will include:
position 1: Possessions: household goods, personal items, and the
materiality of everyday life in Vlooienburg, Amsterdam (1600-1800)
position 2: Diet, food preparation, and consumption: a
bioarchaeological investigation into the use and disposal of animal
products in the Vlooienburg, Amsterdam (1600-1800)
- completion and defence of a PhD thesis within four years;
- regular presentation of intermediate research results at workshops and conferences;
- publication of peer-reviewed articles in international journals;
- assistance in teaching activities in ACASA Archaeology;
- assistance with the creation of museum exhibitions, and a 3D model of Vlooienburg;
- regular contributions to public open-days, and participation in a television documentary;
- participation in the UvA PhD training programme.
Requirements
PhDposition 1: Possessions: household goods, personal items, and the
materiality of everyday life in Vlooienburg, Amsterdam (1600-1800)
- An MA/MSc (or equivalent) with excellent grades in archaeology or a closely-related discipline;
- a strong background in urban archaeology;
- a firm background knowledge of modern world historical archaeology (AD 1600-1800);
- a good knowledge of post medieval ceramics in North western Europe (AD 1600-1800);
- good academic writing and presentation skills;
- excellent communication, social and organisational skills;
- proficiency in English;
- good quantitative and qualitative research skills.;
- the ability to work self-directed, and or as part of an interdisciplinary research team.
position 2: Diet, food preparation, and consumption: a
bioarchaeological investigation into the use and disposal of animal
products in the Vlooienburg, Amsterdam (1600-1800)
- An
MSc (or equivalent)with excellent grades in faunal analysis,
bioarchaeology, environmental archaeology, or a closely-related
discipline; - a strong background in urban archaeology;
- a firm background knowledge of modern world historical archaeology (AD 1600-1800);
- a good knowledge of faunal material from urban sites in North western Europe (AD 1600-1800);
- good academic writing and presentation skills;
- excellent communication, social and organisational skills;
- proficiency in English;
- good quantitative and qualitative research skills;
- the ability to work self-directed, and or as part of an inter- disciplinary research team.
Arbeidsvoorwaarden
The
PhD candidates will be appointed at the Faculty of Humanities at the
University of Amsterdam, ACASA Archaeology. Each appoint- ment is for 4
years for 1,0 fte under the terms of employment currently valid for the
Faculty. In the first instance, a contract will be given for 12 months,
with an extension for the following 36 months on the basis of a positive
evaluation. The starting date of the contract is 1 September 2016. The
gross monthly salary will be €2,174 during the first year to €2,779
during the fourth year, based on 38 hours per week, in accordance with
the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities.
