Job description

The title of the research project is: “Database on legal position of same-sex and different-sex families in European countries”.

A
growing number of European countries has extended a growing portion of
the legal aspects of marriage to same-sex and/or unmarried couples, and
sometimes also to their children. This legal recognition of diversity
has led to considerable legal diversity within and between European
countries. Simultaneously, political and judicial bodies of European
Union and Council of Europe have been developing minimum standards for
the legal recognition of same-sex and/or non-marital families.

This
project focuses on the legal rights and obligations related to three
family formats (marriage, registered partnership, cohabitation), in
particular with respect to such life-course transitions as parenting,
migration, loss of income, separation and death. To this end a
questionnaire has been designed for legal experts in some 20 European
countries where two or more of these legal family formats exist for
same-sex and/or different-sex partners. The national data will be used
for an online database and for comparative legal analysis in light of
the European minimum standards.

This research, led by Prof. Kees
Waaldijk (holder of the world’s first chair in Comparative Sexual
Orientation Law), uses the methodology he developed for the 2005 report
More or less together – Levels of legal consequences of marriage,
cohabitation and registered partnership for different-sex and same-sex
partners. The project is partly funded by the European Union, as part of
a larger interdisciplinary research project (FamiliesAndSocieties –
Changing families and sustainable societies: Policy contexts and
diversity over the life course and across generations) coordinated by
Stockholm University.

The researcher will play a key role in
organizing the survey, liaising with the legal experts, checking their
data and collecting additional data, entering data into the database,
and liaising with experts from other disciplines. The researcher will
also be gathering and interpreting European legal materials, and will be
involved in the comparative analysis of the legal data.

Outside
this main research project, the researcher may also have some other
tasks, including assisting in the development of a Global Legal Index on
Legal Recognition of Homosexual Orientation. This will involve
corresponding to experts all over the world.

Requirements

• LLM or PhD in law;
• Research experience in law;
• Affinity with legal issues concerning same-sex families and with comparative, European and international law;
• Good writing skills in English, plus reading skills in at least one other language;
• Good communication and computer skills, familiarity with MS Excell etc;
• Accuracy.

Conditions of employment

We
offer a full-time or part-time, six months term position, with the
possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance.

Salary
range from € € 2.542,- to € € 3.831,- gross per month on a fulltime
basis (pay scale 9/10 in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement
for Dutch Universities). Salary depends on education and experience.

Leiden
University offers an attractive benefits package with additional
holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses(8.3 %), training and career
development and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you
some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions.
Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a
substantial tax break.

Job description

The
aim of the project is to develop a closer understanding of the relations
between technology and religion. It will do so by investigating the
ways in which technologies help to shape human experiences of
transcendence, of what is beyond the grasp of human understanding and
manipulation. In order to do this, it will connect philosophy of
technology and philosophy of religion to an empirical study of
technologically mediated practices that involve experiences of
transcendence. Two cases will be studied, one in the realm of brain
technologies and one in reproductive technologies. To what extent do
technologies exclude transcendence, and to what extent do they help to
shape new forms of it? How do such technologies reorganize the
boundaries between fate and responsibility, between transcendence and
makeability? And what does this imply for the potential role of
technology in the philosophy of religion?

Requirements

A
master’s degree or equivalent degree in philosophy, preferably with a
background in philosophy of technology or philosophy of religion.
Consideration will also be given to candidates with a multidisciplinary
master’s degree on a topic relevant to the project and some background
in philosophy. Demonstrable interest in philosophical issues relating to
technology and religion, and in empirical approaches to technology,
particularly Conversation Analysis (but previous work in these areas not
required). Good analytical skills. Good communication skills in
English, in writing as well as orally. Good team spirit. Creativity,
open-mindedness, and an ability to develop new ideas.

Information and applicationA description of the PhD project, the overall project of which it is a part and a FAQ can be retrieved from www.utwente.nl/gw/wijsb/organization/verbeek/vici.
Applicants are advised to read these texts before applying. For
questions not answered on the website please contact Peter-Paul Verbeek
(e-mail: p.p.c.c.verbeek@utwente.nl). Women are strongly encouraged to apply.

Your
application should contain the following documents: (1) a letter of

qualifications, and describing how you would want to approach the
project you apply for; (2) a curriculum vitae, including the name and
e-mail address/telephone number of one of your professors (preferably
the supervisor of your master's thesis) and a list of subjects taken and
grades received (this may be an unofficial version or scanned copy; we
can request the original later); (3) a copy of your master's thesis and
copies of publications, if any. Optionally, you can also attach letters
of recommendation from your professors.

Your application should be uploaded no later than November 15, 2014 via www.utwente.nl/vacatures/en. Since this website only accepts three documents per application, please combine documents into max. three files.

Conditions of employment

(or sooner, if possible). The gross salary is € 2.083,- per month in the
first year going up to € 2.664,- in the fourth year. Additionally, the
university provides excellent facilities for professional and personal

18 PhD positions on joint project Data Science Center Eindhoven & Philips Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) - — AcademicTransfer

Job description

Project ContextEindhoven
University of Technology (TU/e) is an internationally renowned
technical university located in the vibrant technological heart of the
Netherlands with high tech companies such as Philips, ASML, NXP and DAF
Trucks. The TU/e has an excellent reputation in collaboration with
industry proven among other things by the fact that it is the number one
university in the world with respect to joint scientific publications
with industrial partners.

The Data Science Center Eindhoven (DSC/e, www.tue.nl/dsce/)
is the response of the TU/e to the growing volume and importance of
data. Through the DSC/e, the TU/e unites its strong research groups in
areas related to data science: computer science, mathematics, electrical
engineering, industrial engineering, innovation sciences, and
industrial design. Research at the DSC/e is multidisciplinary,
reflecting the fact that data science research requires a broad range of
expertise and skills.

The TU/e has recently started a long-term
strategic cooperation with Philips Research Eindhoven on three topics:
data science, health and lighting. As a first concrete action, 70 PhD
students are being hired for these three topics using joint funding from
the TU/e and Philips, of which 18 PhD students will work on the data
science topic. These students will together with researchers from the
TU/e and Philips form a strong research community working together on
scientific and industrial challenges.

Project Themes
The
entire project is divided into 5 themes. Within each theme there is a
specific application focus that will be addressed through intensive
collaboration from several disciplines. For each individual PhD project
we briefly mention the TU/e supervisors and their departments (M&CS =
Mathematics and Computer Science, EE = Electrical Engineering,
IE&IS = Industrial Engineering and Innovation Sciences). PhD
students will have their home base at the department of the first
mentioned professor.

Data Driven Value Proposition Digital
components are being added to Philips lifestyle products. The data from
these products as well as from Philips touch points must be combined to
optimize user experience and maintain customer satisfaction. This will
be delivered through personalized e-coaching and guidance apps. We are
looking for students with expertise in one or more of the following
fields: data mining, machine learning, process analytics, predictive
analytics, and psychology. This theme has openings for 4 PhD students:
  1. User-centric
Consumer Data Analytics: User Behaviour Modelling (supervisors:
Professors De Bra (M&CS) and Petkovic (M&CS))
  2. User-centric
Consumer Data Analytics: User Guidance Principles Modelling
(supervisors: Professors IJsselsteijn (IE&IS) and De Bra (M&CS))
  3. Product-centric

(supervisors: Professors Snijders (IE&IS) and De Bra (IE&IS))
Healthcare
Smart Maintenance Philips has strong leadership positions in healthcare
imaging and patient monitoring systems. In the healthcare domain,
reducing equipment downtime and cost of ownership for hospitals is of
vital importance. Smart maintenance exploits that professional equipment
is connected to the internet and aims to use event and sensor data for
overall cost reduction. We are looking for students with expertise in
one or more of the following fields: operations research, maintenance,
process mining, data mining, machine learning, process analytics and
predictive analytics. This theme has openings for 3 PhD students:

  2. Turning Outcomes of Predictive Models into Better Maintenance Decisions (Professors Boxma (M&CS) and Van Houtum (IE&IS))
  3. Maintenance Concepts for Healthcare Systems (Professors Van Houtum (IE&IS) and Van Leeuwaarden (M&CS))
Optimizing
Healthcare Workflows The delivery of patient care in hospital is a
complex workflow based on fixed protocols. Optimization of patient care
at reduced cost requires the orchestration of multiple clinical
workflows.  Timely getting the imaging/lab tests done and getting the
results back to physicians can help quickly diagnose/treat the patient,
and save lives. The rapid digitization of diagnostics in radiology and
pathology calls for a data-driven optimization of the workflows. We are
looking for students with expertise in one or more of the following
fields: visualisation, data mining, machine learning, process analytics
and predictive analytics. This theme has openings for 4 PhD students:
  1. Predictive Analytics for Healthcare Workflows (Professors Van der Aalst (M&CS) and Van Wijk (M&CS))

  4. Modelling
and Optimization of Pathology Workflows and Flexible Semantic
Orchestration (Professors Van Wijk (M&CS) and Van der Aalst
    (M&CS))
Continuous Personal Health Philips wishes to
develop a cost-effective system for empowering people to self-manage
their health. An important enabler is the wearable sensor technology
developed by Philips because that provides unobtrusive monitoring of
behaviour and habits. We are looking for students with expertise in one
or more of the following fields: signal processing, statistics, data
mining, machine learning, and psychology. This theme has openings for 5
PhD students:
  1. Effective Self-Management by E-Coaching (Professors IJsselsteijn (IE&IS) and De Bra (M&CS))

  4. Blood Pressure Monitoring and Lifestyle Interventions (Professors Korsten (EE) and IJsselsteijn (IE&IS))
  5. Early Stratification of Cardio-vascular Health Risks (Professors Korsten (EE) & Kaymak (IE&IS))
Data
Analytics for Lighting Data gathered from large hardware systems offers
new exciting service propositions. Philips has a unique position with
the ability to extend the hardware to collect data or to respond to the
outcome of predictive filters. In the field of building management and
connected lighting infrastructures, this includes the ability to launch
service businesses, to optimally predict cost-benefits in service
offerings, to provide adaptive configuration, and to support network
maintenance. We are looking for students with a background in one or
more of the following fields: distributed systems, real-time systems,
resource management data mining, and machine learning.  This theme has
openings for 2 PhD students:
  1. Data Analytics for Infrastructures of Connected Lighting (Professors Lukkien (M&CS) and Linnartz (EE)
