Functiebeschrijving

The Department of Astrophysics invites applications for a PhD student position in the Galactic Magnetism group led by Dr Marijke Haverkorn.

As a PhD Student, you will use the innovative low-frequency telescope LOFAR to survey polarized synchrotron emission in our Milky Way. This synchrotron emission uniquely traces weak magnetic fields in the Milky Way gaseous halo, a relatively uncharted terrain. You will process LOFAR data, with which you will gain in-depth knowledge of radio interferometry and LOFAR. You will use this data to investigate the large-scale structure of the Milky Way magnetic field, and determine what this implies for the origin and evolution of Galactic magnetic fields.
You will be an active member of the international Magnetism Key Science Project consortium and participate in consortium meetings, conferences and working visits.

Functie-eisen

You should be an enthusiastic, independent, and highly qualified candidate interested in observational and/or theoretical/computational aspects of scientific research on galactic magnetic fields and interstellar gas.

Arbeidsvoorwaarden

- you will be appointed for an initial period of 18 months, after which your performance will be evaluated. If the evaluation is positive, the contract will be extended by 2.5 years.
- the gross starting salary amounts to € 2,042 per month based on full-time employment, and will increase to € 2,612 per month in the fourth year;
Applicants of any nationality are eligible, and women and members of minorities are especially encouraged to apply.
Dienstverband: Temporary, 4 years.
